I like this song. Can't say the same for you liberal idiots and your neocon brethren. Why not take your useless (and quite pitiful) political arguments elsewhere? Trust me, nobody is going to accuse you of sounding intelligent (except of course the dopes that agree with you.)

I've only seen it on my old cassette version of "GREEN", and never again, and nobody else seems to know what I'm talking about. Please tell me I'm not crazy! (And what would those "4"s mean, anyway?)

i did, but don't know what they mean either

"I love the rain. It washes memories off the sidewalk of life." Woody Allen - Play It Again Sam

or Rebuttal C.
"I don't like this thing! And here's what I'm going to do with it!." J L Dreyfuss - Seinfeld (Toupe episode)

or Rebuttal D.
"Well, you sound like a pretty handy guy there, Jack." Martin Mull - Mr. Mom (personal favorite)

I think that's the final word on all of that.

Somehow they always make me sing along.. it's a big conspiracy.. political patronizing! or maybe it's just a good tune by a great band.

I guess not.....

(Edit: Due to the highly expendable and useless content here previously, and the apparent rash developed by sensitive left leaning citizens -see Orpheus, this portion has been tastefully censored)

Really outstanding song from what, at the time, compared to their earlier work, seemed a rather disappointing album overall.

I feel the lyrics are some kind of lecture. Why would I want a patronising lecture in realpolitik? If I want a lecture in politics I can just read the comments on this thread.

wink

I followed the song meaning link and found this quote attibuted to the song writer;
"I felt the lyric would actually look good to read, and it does read well - there's words like divine and decree, they all start with a 'D', which is good, and things rhyme, but they don't rhyme too much. I can't remember what it's about... Well, somone's at war with themselves.....Anyway, in World Leader Pretend, that was me copying Leonard Cohen, using something like military terms to get across a very simple human emotion"

Right. That's like, deep. Like. No wonder I couldn't understand it

Even if his economic theory were not meretricious and even if he had a tangible product to sell . . . Surely I did not read this at the RP site.

I like R.E.M. quite a bit, having gone to college in Athens during their early years.

However, to me, this is one of their worst songs - lyrics just too pretentious for my taste. Not that I have anything against making a statement (eg Ignoreland, Exhuming McCarthy, several others I like).

(the first comment since 2004 ... i can't believe it)

this is one perfect, fine song ... it has all what I love about R.E.M.

Is Michael a prophet?
considering that this song is from the late 80s, you could argue this way ...

Dead or broke? That doesn't sound good. And since I'm not in the top 5%, I guess I'm totally F' ed. ;)

But enough of that, I kind of think this might be the best song from the most important band of the 80's. The steel guitar rules. :)
