Not exactly. The album came out in 1990. I stumbled upon it at the time, and it became one of my favorites back then. I think it holds up really well and still sounds fresh. If you like this track, you'll like the whole album. |

Yuck! So compressed, not to mention terrible.
Ditto that she is incredibly beautiful though; also I would probably like the lyrics if I understood them.

I went right out and bought her album after hearing this incredible song, and even bought the next one with hope in my heart for another song like this. The other songs are good, but "let's go catch her at the cafe" good, not "buy her album now!" good.

Hey! "Twist" again! Back in my college DJ days I broke this song on radio in my hometown. Got the promo copy and thought it rocked.

A bit off the music topic, here's a bit of movie trivia for you:
this song was used in a movie called "Bandits" starring Bruce Willis, Billy-Bob Thornton, and Kate Blanshett (and Jane Fonda's son, I forget his name, who almost steals the show). That's where I first heard the song and why I own the album.
If you haven't seen "Bandits" and you like comedies, check it out. It's a sleeper movie that got little attention, loosely based on a true story of bank robbers known as the "Sleep-over Bandits". These guys would invade the home of the branch manager the night before, spend the night with the family, and get him to open the safe for them first thing in the morning.
There is one scene that has brought me to tears of laughter all three times I have seen it (Bruce has convinced Billy-Bob , a hopeless hypochondriac, that B-B has a brain tumor; and B-B gets progressively paralyzed while Kate tries to drag him around the dance floor). Billy-Bob and Kate are both brilliant.
(And the movie has an awesome soundtrack including Tanita Tikaram!)

OOPs... Tanita Tikaram is one of the most physically beautiful women on the planet!
Great poet/songwriter, glad to hear her on RP.
All her albums are so cool.
Bill, what about her "Cathedral Song" sometime please?
happy contrails!

She and her band were the tightest band I have ever seen. It was at Peabody's Down Under in Cleveland, in the late 80's. The crowd was the most diverse group I'd ever seen at a show like this. They ranged from Black Flag T-Shirt wearing punks to folks that looked like they were going to see Carmen...
Nice surprise Bill. |

Care not whether that oboe is synthesized or not!
With headphones you can hear the musician take breath, so it is most likely live and real. Lovely too. |

Just to echo some of the comments below: This is the first time that I have heard this song. Ever. And it's not like I'm some pop music neophyte.
But my wife, who grew up in Germany, knew this song word for word.
I guess I was a bit sheltered living in Blacksburg, VA in the late 80s.

Huh? Different planet??
Where I live this song is still on air, even nowaydays. And I have to agree: The song was definitly overplayed some years ago.
But overall this can't change my mind and I have to tell that I love her voice and the melancholic mood of this song.
Always reminds me of the late 80's, my first 'big love' and my time in the army...
