I love Natalie Merchant's voice. It's sly, intriguing. & fits very well with slide guitar solos....

i don't understand why people hate her voice ... it's different ... eclectic ... this would be eclectic radio.

Wow, I consitently like NM's voice. It is a nice reprieve from the plethera of wispy nondistinct female singers. I put her up there with Joan Osborne, Sarah McLachlin, etc.

I'd never put Joan Osborne up with SM or even NM. Gadzooks..

Is she singing about Mr. Coffee? I swear I heard it.

I'm okay with this, moreso than most of her stuff, but yeezuz her voice is flat.

Good point - as if there's some method to the madness here at RP where, happily, everything belongs!
That said, the only thing that saves this song from the trash bin is the killer guitar work.

Intellectually, I keep telling myself that I should like Natalie Merchant. But I just can't do it and I've been trying since the 80's.

That being said, the live version of this song is pretty good. Maybe her voice is covered up a bit by the louder, more aggressive music.

Brad,
I gave this song a 6. I like it and am surprised by the way it sounds live. Yield is fantastic. I think it's Pearl Jam's most focused rock album.

I saw a documentary on Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer on whose life the movie Monster was based.

From what I remember, according to the documentary, Aileen asked for this song to be played at her funeral after she was executed . I always liked this song, but after watching the documentary this song makes me sad and at the same time gives me the creeps.

Bill, that was a great segue from Cortez the Killer to this one. The cords, the mood -- genius!

No No No.
You naysayers are perfectly intitled to your opinions, but you're also wrong! :p
This song is great.
For me this strikes a great balance between the up pace backing and the introspective vocals, and if i don't feel like over analysing it, it falls neatly into that musical category that makes me want to dance like a drunken uncle at a wedding.

I really like this image. Happens that I was at the supermarket this very night, wandering the deserted aisles, hearing the likes of Little River Band and Richard Marx. Somehow, those songs work in that environment. Maybe I should request this song next time I need some Jif or Smuckers. In the vast loneliness of a late night supermarket, this song may take on new life.

I usually shop at Publix. I assume that all of their music comes "canned" or from a central location. They play the usual "blah" supermarket stuff, but every now and then they will throw in something that makes me stop shopping and say to myself, "man, I can't believe I heard that here."

The funny thing is she actually hired a back-up singer to hit, like, two high notes in the song...
