Dunno why I like the Cure so much. I just love Robert Smith's voice and his songwriting. {#Good-vibes}

Worth getting for the A side, though.

You Brits must have had a different tape from North Americans.  I thought the Standing on the Beach" cassette was amazing.  This is what the Canadian pressing was:

Side one - The singles

  1. "Killing an Arab"
  2. "Boys Don't Cry"
  3. "Jumping Someone Else's Train"
  4. "A Forest"
  5. "Primary"
  6. "Charlotte Sometimes"
  7. "The Hanging Garden"
  8. "Let's Go to Bed"
  9. "The Walk"
  10. "The Lovecats"
  11. "The Caterpillar"
  12. "In Between Days"
  13. "Close to Me"
Side two - The b-sides
  1. "I'm Cold"
  2. "Another Journey By Train"
  3. "Descent"
  4. "Splintered in Her Head"
  5. "Mr. Pink Eye"
  6. "Happy the Man"
  7. "Throw Your Foot"
  8. "The Exploding Boy"
  9. "A Few Hours After This"
  10. "A Man Inside My Mouth"
  11. "Stop Dead"
  12. "New Day"
And I must say, it is one of my all-time favourite compilations, with every song seeming to flow into the next.

And this is what really pisses me off about a lot of CD remakes.  They move the songs around so that they don't meld together like they did on the album or, in the case of "Staring at the Sea" half of the original is missing and you have to buy another CD (in this case, "Connecting the Dots") to get all the songs and then you get a lot of extras which is fine, but the continuity of the album is gone.  A real pet peeve of mine!

The lyrics are truly amazing. Since they haven't been posted for several pages, here they are:

yesterday i got so old
i felt like i could die
yesterday i got so old
it made me want to cry
go on go on
just walk away
go on go on
your choice is made
go on go on
and disappear
go on go on
away from here

and i know i was wrong
when i said it was true
that it couldn't be me and be her
inbetween without you
without you

yesterday i got so scared
i shivered like a child
yesterday away from you
it froze me deep inside
come back come back
don't walk away
come back come back
come back today
come back come back
why can't you see?
come back come back
come back to me

and i know i was wrong
when i said it was true
that it couldn't be me and be her
inbetween without you
without you

This concept has always resonated for me. Lamenting limbo status, yet with hope of escaping.

VH1 Classic actually has their version of 120 Minutes now, which shows many of the same videos you'd see on the original version. It comes on late at night a few nights a week (thank goodness for TiVo). Most common artists played are The Cure, The Smiths, Morrissey, REM, and U2, but they do a pretty good job of mixing it up (although there are a few videos that they always seem to show too often). I've actually seen a few videos on there that I had never seen before ("There She Goes", by the La's, and "Mountain Song" by Jane's Addiction, among them).

This song single handedly started my interest in alternative music (back when it was truly alternative).  I recall staying up late and watching "120 Minutes" on MTV (back when MTV played music).  The Cure's Head on the Door was the #1 album on the college charts and the VJ played this song.  And my love affair with current, but not on the radio, music began.  Thank you, Robert Smith et al!

Great tune.  It has a real strong sense of place for me.
