Bought the LP as it was issued; this is still a favorite track. The whole LP is a gem.

Bought mine too when it was first released on the east coast.  I was barely a  teen!  Changed my life I think.  Still have my original copy.

It's the time signature, 5/4. IMHO, Cippolina's response to Brubeck. Brubeck was local to SF at that time, lionized in the press, and certainly well known to a stylistic sponge like Cippolina. Cool, eh?

Not just the time sig, but the first six notes.

Agreed; that's the first thing I thought of too.  Right down to the minimalist percussion.

Not too shabby.

Weird. Yesterday I watched a movie called Quicksilver starring Kevin Bacon about a stock broker turned bike messenger. Not a good film, but it has some entertaining bits in it. Anyway, when I googled the movie this morning, I also got some hits for Quicksilver Messenger Service. I thought to myself, "I wonder what they sound like". And somehow Bill must have been reading my mind, because here we are listening to them.

Great song...one that some might not be hearing for much longer if a new law is passed preventing workers playing any kind of radio in the office etc without a perfomance license that companies would certainly not want to pay for, this is a possibility in the UK and might spread to the US and so on.

Give them one finger and they'll take five (or rather a whole hand) is a Dutch saying. Very true in this case.

I remember listening to this on KBEY in Kansas City in 1970 while working on my MSEE. The DJ at the time commented that this was basically a jam session that QMS recorded -- imagine the talent to improvise like this. I never knew the name of this cut until just now!
