I love Steve Earle. Never heard Transcendental Blues before but immediately recognized it as Steve. Lot's of soul from that guy.

Lack of intonation on a singer's part is highly overrated.

HA :)

Oh yeah, he's been neutered alright. Just listen to his new CD, "The Revolution Starts.......Now" and you'll know he hasn't lost his balls. Check out "F*#k the FCC", or "Condi, Condi", or virtually ANY song on this CD (or any of his post-druggie days' CDs) and you'll get to hear music that MEANS something. Neutered? I don't think so.

Ironically, in an interview on NPR last week he acknowledged that "he's the richest Marxist he knows". I like his songs but he's got political problems within himself.

Very curious. Can either of you offer an explanation as to why?

I think its all perspective - a matter of contrast per se, not necessarily an unfortunate condition. When everyone was "poor", they knew how to be happy without all the luxuries we now consider "necessities" and they didn't watch as their neighbors lived in great prosperity.

I marvel at how foks can have on-demand creature comforts (indoor plumbing, heating, cooling, effortless transportation, e.g.- automobiles, televisions and stereos, etc.) and still be condered to be "poor" or living at the "poverty level" (as defined by who's standard, by the way???). Moreover, it makes one wonder why this group is unhappy as compared to truly poor people - those who define "luxury" and "comfort" as a warm meal and a safe, clean place to sleep.

Well, pattyann, nobody ever accused Steve Earle of having a great voice, just of being a great writer and performer. Still might not be your cup-O'-meat, but if you're interested in hearing what all the buzz is about, give a listen to some covers that people like Supersuckers, Shawn Colvin,The Pretenders and others have done. You can find a bunch of others at http://www.steveearle.net/covers.php I've been turned on to all kinds of great music by RP listeners (and steered towards some real crap) but it never hurts to open your mind a bit, unless something falls out in the process.

In my opinion Steve Earle is one of the all time great songwriters of our/any generation and what an amazing live show. I caught him playing with the DelMecurdy (sp) band. and seen the simulcast for the transendental tour. I was sorry to have missed that one.
If you ever get the chance check him out ....

On the other hand my first thought was this song maybe deserved a little better. I gave it an excellent 8. Steve Earle is a brilliant songwriter and very expressive in his own way. It's a bit like John Hiatt who is equally an outstanding writer but his voice doesn't appeal to everyone. But if you can get your head around the fact that Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter of our time and his singing ranges from sucks big time to highly emotional, expressive and engaging, then there's a chance that you may be able to re-evaluate your opinion of Steve Earle. Listen closer and feel a little deeper. You'll get it.

Cheers

He reminds me of John Prine without Prine's sense of humor. I don't know why. How about more Prine.

I'll second the votes for more Steve Earle. I just saw him a couple of months ago in Vancouver. Great venue but the sound was so awful you couldn't hear him or the band over the reverb. I was *so* bummed... i think he's one of the most evocative and interesting American songwriters on the scene today. Kind of an angrier blusier Bruce Cockburn (well,at least the earlier Cockburn).

A great song and a great album by one of the most dynamic artists playing today. Check out "Jerusulem." It's nice to see there are still people working on the edge.

I can always trust RP to play the cut that transcends style and genre and convinces me that here's another artist that I've overlooked.

Steve Earle, I think I've had him confused with Stevie Ray Vaughn, currently playing. Always educational, here you're reminding me why Stevie Ray is still not to my taste. Only bluesman I ever really connected to was Missisippi John Hurt.

And now Bill's on to Cracker. Great segue. Always prefer a blues I can move my hips to. Wow roots journey, now it's "Man of Constant Sorrow".How about "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor" ?

Now how to bring this on around back ?

Joan Osborne "One of Us" !!!! Bill, I love ya !!!

Fantastic stuff from a truly inspired artist! I already loved his stuff before I heard this, and it just blew everything else away! Hey how about "I Ain't Ever Satisfied" or "Copperhead Road"?
