Sure - haven't you ever known an ugly hot chick? She's the one that isn't all that physically attractive, but she's just so damn cool that she's hot anyway. I've dated a couple - they make very high quality, low maintenance girlfriends.

SNZ have taken a bunch of very derivative elements and come up with something thoroughly original. And timely, too, if you ask me - right about the time Hot came out, it was just the right thing. Clearly that's born out in the way their popularity skyrocketed at the time.

For my part, I'm totally psyched to hear SNZ on RP any time, and this entire album is excellent!

Derivative adj.-Copied or adapted from others.

Original adj Not derived from others. Fresh and unusual.

Not making fun here...just confused. (scratches head)

Well. . . one usually shakes the vodka in solid cubes of ice to get it as cold as possible and then strain it into the glass with no ice. The glass however should be cold and only the merest hint of Martini or other enhancement - only enough to coat the glass.

A swizzle is not for this drink. . . ever.

Ah, the official Port-A-John theme song. ;-)

Novelty, yes, but good novelty. Quite likeable (and catchy).

and my favorite bar has my favorite martini (what I call the Mugro, of course, made with Grey Goose mandarin vodka and a splash of Gran Marnier, and a slice of orange as garnish, shaken not stirred and ice cold!),

Remember when swing made a comeback a couple years ago and all those swing clubs cropped up. That was a wild 3 weeks. I bet all those clubs are martini bars now-- at least until people realize that martinis taste like **** and the glass is really the best part.

I don't care what the "in thing" is. I know that I like swing and I like Martinis, so as long as my favorite station (RP of course!) has the swing, and my favorite bar has my favorite martini (what I call the Mugro, of course, made with Grey Goose mandarin vodka and a splash of Gran Marnier, and a slice of orange as garnish, shaken not stirred and ice cold!), then I could care less what everyone else thinks.

Their best CD to date, but still they're considered a novelty act by most people.

Sadly, yes. The term "novelty act" is wrongly slapped on many multi-talented groups whose music may be jokey and eccentric.

This song was used to great effect in Contact, the Susan Stroman Broadway musical. When heard with the incredibly sexy, sensual and beautiful dancing of that show, the music was absolutely perfect.

Historically significant perhaps, but nothing that conjures up musical paradise to me. An early cartoon, perhaps. Dancing cigarettes and such nonsense.

I'm not sure why, but SNZ (and particularly this song) always sounds like a caricature of this sound, and not the real thing. It seems like they're trying too hard to sound like Billie, Cab, et al. Does anyone else feel that way, I wonder?

i have to agree. i can't hear them without wishing i was listening to the real thing. so, thanks, Bill, for putting some of the geniune stuff on next :)

I wonder if, perhaps, it's possible that you get that impression from the band's "whole package" image, in other words, the fact that they seem to dress the part. I can see that. In their defense, I've seen them live, and they pulled out all the stops and just blazed their set. It seems like that would be difficult with anything shy of authenticity.

I've never seen them, so no...it's not that.
