Hmm... my feelings about Neil Young are complex. And yet I find the older I get, the more I like him. Not sure why that is but its definitely going on. The Church covered "Killer Cortez" on their "Box of Birds" covers albumn and I think that started it.

I saw him on MTV in the 80s essentially saying kids were idiots for not liking him... needless to say, as a "kid" of that time, I was insulted (though, honestly, I hardly even knew who he was... more likely the source of his decline in popularity if you ask me).

As far as tolerating his voice, which of course is... um... an acquired taste, I find that as you listen to the rougher singers, you begin to prefer the flaws to perfection. Its sort of like falling in love with someone and become fond of the parts that make them unique, even if they are not conventionally beautiful. Millions love to listen to Bob Dylan for this reason... and I suspect Neil falls squarely into that category.

... Like a Hurricane is so appropriate as Cyclone Glenda just crossed the coast here in West Australia and Neil Young is keepin' us all safe in the Power of this magnificent Classic. ... ...

Jeez, I think I used to play this with my band back in high school. Not sure I wanted that memory returned to me.

That's a bit more harsh than I would have put things, but since you mentioned it...
Glad for those folks who dig NY, but to me, it's in the 'ears bleed' category as well. It even makes me too tired to add my typical 'I respect his musicianship, but..' yadda yadda yadda, you get the point...

RAWK-ON !

I like to play with people who can play simple and are not threatened by other musicians thinking they can't play. And that eliminates 99 percent of all musicians.

I'll go for things that I know are going to be wrong, with a vengeance.

Not really...I prefer it to a boring studio musician without any real feeling for the music. Technically good guitar players are a dime a dozen. Try and imitate his sound if you think it's easy. I bet you won't get close.

The only better version is the Live Rust one...this still gets a 10 though. Neil was grunge before there was a term for it.

His zany loose guitar work is part of the Neil Young whole. It's insane but it works and the melody is carried very well even in this most un-technical form. It'd be very hard to mimick

A rare care of the unplugged version far outshining the studio version. A 3 compared to an 8.

Holy crap I can't stand 99% of his music, and this song is definately in that grouping. From his whiney voice to the "novice in a practice room" guitar "solo" that sounds confused and meandering, this song makes me prefer his work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash even more.
