You rated Collective Soul a 9, so I'm not surprised...

Love this guy. Whenever I hear one of his songs, a scene from Down By Law flashes in my mind.

I'll second that notion. My throat hurts listening to him as well... Ah, the dangers of life-long smoking.

Any time you hear Rod Stewart sing something, it really pays to track down the original and listen to it instead.

That would be an excellent question for Waits.

I really don't like Tom's voice, especially after following Joni Mitchell. I will say, however, that this is a much better version than Rod Stewart's drivel.

I agree. What's great about singing your own songs is that no one can picture somebody else singing them.

He's the man. Nobody does masculine sensitivity like Tom. A near-perfect pop song.

No, you definitely aren't. But there are many of us who think he's brilliant. We can all just get along.

I *adore* Tom Waits, but this is not doing it for me.

Maybe it's that Rod Stewart association...

I'm willing to bet that people have asked the same about Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and others. But that hasn't much hindered their popularity either. There's a certain appeal to those who think, live and work 'outside the box'.

I think people like him because he is a true original and truely talented. He has a unique voice which many people can't deal with as he falls outside their narrow "good voice" definitions. Hey, he wouldn't make it through the first round of American Idol so you aren't alone in your views.

Your last comment is the fall back of those that don't get it. I don't get some music as well and some of that music I know is good. Doesn't mean i have to like it though and doesn't mean other people are pretending to like it.

Well, said. Fortunately for me on this one, I get it and like it

He does sound like the Cookie Monster , but I assure you my love of him has nothing to do with "should". I love the way his voice sounds and I love his songwriting and his ability to capture a certain segment of American life and his eye for detail and his melodies and . . . I could go on and on. None of that is about "should".

I just don't quite get Tom Waits' appeal either. I like hoarseness in someone's voice in moderation, but this is just too much, like he's sick or a 4-pack-a-day smoker or something. Sure, it's unique, but is that a merit in itself?

It's not the voice itself that is the appeal. It's part of the package. He is a brilliant songwriter, and his vocals often fit his imagery.

Do you have a problem with Louis Armstrong?
