Maybe the rest of us boomer types liked it because it was better than watching the TV and seeing Hee Haw or the Monkees, or watching soldiers get killed on TV. (Deja Vu?)
Stuff like this, compared to the white bread world a lot of us lived in in middle class America in the 60s or 70s was refreshing to hear, in a world where conformity was overwhelming.
Not all art rock has survived as well as this.
I always loved this guy's voice, yet still couldn't tell you his name... |

I guess you had to be coming of age with "prog" music to like it now. But, I agree with other comments that Procul Harum just seemed somehow profound. I can also see how others would think it overblown.

Apparently, I'm swimming upstream here...but this is marginal. The drama? Seagulls? Maybe, again, I'm lacking the historical perspective. |

a couple of things about procol harum.
.....
first, when they did this song, their guitarist
was robin trower! he contributed some guitar-driven
songs that were very cool in this "prog" context.
.....
second, procol harum is STILL TOGETHER! click here

1973: rock began to spiral out of its dominant orbit. Somewhere in the background Procol Harum was playing. It seemed intelligent, persuasive.

I remember thinking this was pretty cool about 25 plus years ago. It did not age well. Pretty good arrangement, but the lyrics are so cliched and trite.
I guess it was the chemicals back then...
