i used to like rem. they seemed like a breath of fresh air on the dismal fm radio landscape.
however, since i've been listening to all the great stuff on rp, i find that rem sounds mediocre and stale compared to the rest of the material i'm hearing here.
rem burnout, thanks to rp!
whooda thunkit...
Was never really that impressed by REM, lyrics too kitschy for my taste and musically not that special. Still they put out a few decent tunes although not worth the hype IMO. |

Greatness, I'll take REM anytime.

Probably more an indicator of REM's influence on many of those other bands than of their own staleness, I suspect. |

Talented? yes. Genius? yes. Insanly overplayed to the point were even the most devout fan can learn to hate them? Absolutly.
I need around... five years of not knowing that REM ever exsisted before I can see them as anything other than "pop."

It's so refreshing to hear more esoteric REM - especially from Reckoning - next to Murmur for one of the best ever - it makes me sick to hear them played in a main-stream context - i.e. "Loosing My Religion" and "Stand" -
This station has reinvigorated my hope that music isn't totally dead and corporate rock won't prevail.

Yes, I agree. They were over-rated by the hype-crazy press (not so much now, they've fallen out of favor it seems), many songs are overplayed by rotation-crazy radio (I really don't need to hear End of the World As We Know it again) and I think they would be the first to say they are not virtuoso musicians.
That said, are they still one of the best and most influential bands in the last 20 years? Yup. Sorry, but yup. Them songs are three good minutes, and maybe even usually longer. Heehee! Bring it on. |

It's really very sad they forgot how to make this kind of music. They made going to school in Athens, Ga. in 1983 an experience of a lifetime.

Heh. I was just going to say how much the last group , Guided By Voices, sounded like early REM, then you came back with a great early REM tune!
Yeah, nothing else touches this.

Outstanding tune -- marked the beginning of a new direction in alt-pop. Ageless.

I just love early R.E.M. & this tune ranks up there with the best! They could rock, even though you couldn't always understand what Stipe was saying.

I tried and tried to hate REM back in the 80's but songs like this eventually convinced me how good they were and I fell in love.

One of the best REM songs of all time - - which is saying quite a darn bit.
