Cynaera wrote:This has always been a difficult song for me to listen to - he messes up the words, and I guess I'm sorta loyal to Judy Garland's original from The Wizard of Oz... Maybe if I heard something from IK that wasn't so well-recognized, I'd feel differently. Nevertheless, RIP, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - you have soul. After having read a lot of the other comments on this song, I can see that I need to grit my teeth and get past my damned purist stigma. I'll try to give it another listen, and despite the screwed-up words, I need to absorb the SOUL of what he was singing, and not just the lyrics and music. Good lesson to learn. I'm not quite ready for it at this point, but I'll get there... |

My only complaint about this song is how much of it got snipped out in the adaptation. Wish he'd sung more of it. RIP, Brudda Iz. |

wikipedia says:
Throughout his life, Kamakawiwoʻole was obese and at one point carried 757 pounds (343 kg; 54.1 st) on his 6-foot-2-inch (1.88 m) frame.<4> He endured several hospitalizations because of problems caused by his weight. At age 38, he died of weight-related respiratory illness at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu on June 26, 1997, at 12:18 a.m.<4> Kamakawiwoʻole is survived by his wife, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and his daughter, Ceslie-Ann "Wehi".<5> The Hawaiʻi State Flag flew at half-mast on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral. Thousands of fans gathered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997.<5> On September 20, 2003, hundreds paid tribute to Kamakawiwoʻole as a bronze bust of the revered singer was unveiled at the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on Oʻahu. The singer's widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer were present for the dedication ceremony.<6> |

The late Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Kah-MAH-kah-VEE-voh-OH-lay), did something rare in music. He redefined a beloved classic.
His version of "Over the Rainbow" has the poignancy of Judy Garland's and the shimmering vulnerability, but these days it's heard so often on TV and in the movies, a younger generation may only know Israel's version. It's become so popular, it is now the most requested version of the song by far, according to music publishing house EMI. That's quite remarkable for a rendition with one voice, accompanied only by ukulele. {more} Interesting to me, as this is the first I've heard this song and would say the opposite of this reviewer: Judy Garland's version is the only one I hear and have grown tired of. I love the simplicity of this one. It's both different and beautiful enough to allow me to enjoy it as a stand-alone song instead of having Garland in the back of my head as comparison the whole time. Perhaps I would be just as tired of Israel's version if I watched TV or more movies, but I hope to keep enjoying this song on RP for a long time to come. |

Balla_Boy wrote:I like the Wonderful World bit. It's the misplaced lines in the Over the Rainbow bit that snag me. I suspect that's because as an occassional pub gigger I've had that dread, sweaty, nauseous feeling when the lyric won't come and you have to fudge the line. I probably have some sort of pavlovian response now.
You mean the Christina Aguilera Fail syndrome? |

Hard to reconcile this little snatch of perfection with that album cover.
It always kind of bugged me that he didn't bother to learn the real words, Aguilera-style. But I guess I can forgive him now he's dead.
