I watched a documentary about this guy performing this and many other songs in the midst of a potential riot - Inspirational. Wouldn't have thought before hand this music could be lifted even higher in my eyes.

Johray63 wrote:Check out the bassplaying by James Jamerson. He's responsible for all the great, unique, very influential bassplaying, on most of the sixties and early seventies Motown records, together with the other "Funk Brothers", as these studio musicians named themselves. At the time studio musicians didn't get the credits like they do today. What's Going On was in fact the first Motown album that listed musicians credits. Marvin Gaye (and many others) called Jamerson a genius and said a prayer during a concert when he'd heard Jamerson died. Shortly after that, Marvin Gaye died too. Just like Jamerson, very tragical, as we all know. Jamerson's bass on this track is iconic. The story is that he came in from a night of carousing, hung over, read through the charts once, and played the most amazing bass track ever. Years later after Motown moved to LA, a local wise guy—having heard the story about how it was invented—bet Jamerson a good deal of money that he couldn't recreate it on the spot. Jamerson collected. |

And perfect for this day - it's hot, the sky's clear blue, the birds are singing and the butterflies are exploring every blooming flower they can find. No loud engines, no barking dogs... It's scary-good, as if the music of Marvin Gaye were controlling the environment. Well, maybe it can... I knew Cynaera would have commented on this Godlike track. Trying to keep her posts on the front page. RIP Ann |

Fell in love with this the moment it started. I was in need of something new and Marvin Gaye's a perfect candidate now.

Just perfect music for a glorious sunny day here in the UK - not a cloud in the sky. Shame the same can't be said for the political and social world around us.

From the slow finger-snapping end of Pressure, to the vocal party atmosphere intro of What's Going On...I'm impressed.

AndyJ wrote:Good music... Maybe a some more Motown sounds tossed into the mix... No. Not a steady dose or even set...Just some bits like this to shake it up and offer new music to a new generation. Marvin Gaye is always good... So is some Otis... There are quite a few Motown artists played here, such as Marvin Gaye, but Otis Redding did not record for the Motown label or one of their subsidiaries, nor was he from Detroit - he was awesome, though. |
