Just doesn't sound the same over the computer speakers - I want the cracks and pops et al from my LP I stole from my parents. Got to fix the record player....how else can I play time out, time further out, and time from outer space???

OK, this is a classic by any definition. But if we're going to be hearing jazz here how about some of the really good stuff by Prez, Hawk, Fats Navarro, Lee Morgan, etc. that most people won't have heard?
This song always makes me laugh because I imagine nattily dressed high school preppies in the 50s tapping their feet in time and trying to get their suburban groove thang going...

This is a classic, but it doesn't really have much soul. We could do much better with a bit of Miles Davis or John Coltrane from the same period.

I wonder if these guys ever got tired of playing this. I can listen to Take Five several times in a row and still get off on it (maybe it's the 5/4 time signature -- same as the Mission Impossible theme), but to have to play it -- perhaps to be demanded to play it -- several nights a week, several months a year, for several years... I can see a Stephen King novel in there someplace!

Well, the drum solo gets lots of praise but, it's not my favorite element. "Math Jazz?" Granted, it doesn't swing like Basie but I wouldn't call Paul Desmond's playing "mathematical." |

I wonder if this song (or anything from 'Time Out') is on that probe that was sent out to deep space. Accessible, inventive and undeniably jazz.

My 10 rating goes to the tune, Dave Brubeck, the late Paul Desmond and to RP for playing the cut (can't vote twice).

My dad has this on LP, and I remember listening to it when I was a kid. I'll still play it from the same record sometimes in the afternoon, although it's getting kinda worn. I'm thinking this song will still be cool 20, 40, even 100 years from now. A-1 stuff. :)

1. Go over to the wrong side of town, if you know what I mean.
2. Find a bar with someone's name in neon. If you live in Oakland, try Esther's Orbit Room.
3. Go in. Order a cocktail. Not beer. Not a shot. Try a brandy press or a Manhattan. Do not order wine.
4. Repeat.
5. Find the jukebox. Play some jazz. Look for this song, but settle for A) Rosemary Clooney, B) Johnny "Guitar" Watson or C) any B-side of Ray Charles
6. Buy a drink for the oldest woman in the place, especially if she's the bartender.
7. Ask who's the biggest star to ever go into that bar.
8. Ask what's going on in the neighborhood.
9. Give the person next to you a dollar to play some songs.
10. Then come back here and listen to Take 5. If it's still a 3, there's nothing that can be done.
Nicely done! (pimp) |

Interesting thing to note: the entire album was an experiment with different time signatures, after noting that while jazz musicians had basically played with nearly everything, they still did it in a 4/4 time. Dave Brubeck hoped to open eyes to the possibilities of other time signatures... and despite this being a seminal work, there aren't many songs outside of the usual 4/4 time (the main exception being waltzes).
Still amazing; --d
