Much oblidged, not aware of the source, my wife has been saying that for years.

Thank you for the keeping the tradition alive! My mom and I have to try and hunt down Alice's Restaurant every year on our local radio stations. It's great to have it on m favorite online radio station with no static!

A brief bit of history. According to his profile BillG was born in 1953. Due to the mechanics of the draft and the timing of its demise, this gives him about a one in four chance of having been compelled to undergo all of the inspections, detections, injections, neglections, but have the whole thing end just before the dreaded selection. That experience makes this song optimally funny. If not Bill a few of his friends I'm sure.

Yeah! We here in the deep south are known as "shitkickers" or "goatropers". Someone must have pissed in his teapot.

From some of the comments today, it would seem that this song has failed to resonate with some generations. For others it is as much a part of Thanksgiving as stuffing.

If you don't get it, it's perhpas because your feelings of Vietnam are of the same fleeting quality as seeing that 150 have died in Iraq this month. You read the headline and move quickly on to the next thing. Arlo was both entertaining and poignant at a time before we became numb to war.
Well spoken and so true, we are numb to war and deaf to pommy whingers!

couldn't have been much of a day if a song ruined it. I would suggest not listening in 6 hours when it plays again. wouldn't want to ruin your evening.

wait... you're in England. isn't it evening time there? was it a retroactive ruining of your day?

Chill or you'll blow a gasket - its only a song. You have free choice to not listen so it can hardly be compared to torture.

Arlo Guthrie is from Massachusetts. The song is set in Massachusetts. Not the deep south. Try again!

Abu-Ghraibish torture!

Hillbilly - singular

Funny to mention Abu Ghraib considering what this song is actually about and what's going on now.

Have a nice day!

First time I switched off RP trying some other alternative station now!

Abu-Ghraibish torture!

No wonder Guthrie is completely down the drain, since at leaswt 40 years - possibly due to this terrible piece of crap!

STINGRAY!

PS
I don´t care of this may be some kind of American music-history. Shit remains shit!

I'm sorry, I know people like this this (obviously from the comments), but I am just failing to see the appeal, I was going to give it a 1, but then I realized it is more tolerable than most things I have called suck-barfo, so I bumped it up to a 2, but I don't really know where to put it because it is already no longer annoying me quite as much, maybe I'll bump it up to a 3 and just go about my day, except it just keeps going for a long time while I'm trying to get work done and this song walked up, sat down, and distracted me mightily with no real entertainment value.

Well, nothing personal mind you but judging from your RP name, it takes you awhile to see the light and then only just before it's too late. All seriousness aside have a turkey leg and join the toast in the spirit of fun.
