For her it was about Bob, but for me it brings back memories and feelings of my courting days. Very nice song. I appreciate a version that does not have a skip in the chorus (my vinyl did).

My Dad, who was a JB hater, because of her political beliefs, ordered me not to go to one of her concerts, (I did anyway), became a believer when he heard this song/album. It's always been one of my favorites.

It's always impressive when an artist has something they really want to say in their music and they put their heart into it.

What a great song.
JP does a great cover, but still Joan's version is awesome.
Too bad they didn't do it together at Live Aid.

I agree; but you don't need to shout. It doesn't convince anybody and make you look bad.

Cannot. Never could, and still just . . . can't. It does make me laugh, though! |

Nah, check out the album 'Come From The Shadows'. The superb, original Nashville production on that album is preferable to this IMHO. |

Joan Baez - "Diamonds and Rust" Live (1975)
"The voice of the eternal angel, no one can bring this kind of beauty to a song, only Joan Baez, long live the eternal angel"
"Well I'll be damned Here comes your ghost again But that's not unusual It's just that the moon is full And you happened to call And here I sit Hand on the telephone Hearing a voice I'd known A couple of light years ago Heading straight for a fall
As I remember your eyes Were bluer than robin's eggs My poetry was lousy you said Where are you calling from? A booth in the midwest Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks You brought me something We both know what memories can bring They bring diamonds and rust
Well you burst on the scene Already a legend The unwashed phenomenon The original vagabond You strayed into my arms And there you stayed Temporarily lost at sea The Madonna was yours for free Yes the girl on the half-shell Would keep you unharmed
Now I see you standing With brown leaves falling around And snow in your hair Now you're smiling out the window Of that crummy hotel Over Washington Square Our breath comes out white clouds Mingles and hangs in the air Speaking strictly for me We both could have died then and there
Now you're telling me You're not nostalgic Then give me another word for it You who are so good with words And at keeping things vague Because I need some of that vagueness now It's all come back too clearly Yes I loved you dearly And if you're offering me diamonds and rust I've already paid"
words and music by Ms. Joan Chandos Baez

This song grows more powerful every time I hear it! It is important to accept one's limitations - whether as an artist, or as a critic. JB long ago acknowledged her modest talent for writing lyrics - so what? This is among her best compositions, and why shouldn't it be, it comes from deep in the heart. Her limited songwriting talent makes her accomplishment that much more commendable - IMHO, that is!
And to say that anyone is a better interpreter of a song than the person who wrote it is like saying a McDonald's Fishwich is better than Trout Almondine!

What in God's name is with the billy-goat vibrato vocals? It might be tolerable if she would just stop doing that. Horrible.

Some of you may not know that Joan Baez was one of the first high profile supporters of Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers of America union of Chicano agricultural workers.

My god this is horrible. I have been listening to RP for 4 hours happily. This caused me to turn it off. Something about the melodramatic vibrato makes me want to puke.
