It amazes me how many contributors express their extremely negative feelings about songs on RP . . .

I love RP. I happily watch a monthly contribution be billed to my card. I post positive comments pretty regularly. AND I love commenting in the most acidic way I can manage when something strikes me as being repetitious or screechy or too loud or too soft or too ripped off or too pretentious or too vapid or. . . .

It's all part of the fun, man. All part of the fun.

Oh, yeah, BTW--this Bragg song is pretty much all of the above, Mr. Bragg's pleasant personality and Ms. Merchant's lovely vocal presence notwithstanding.

Add me to the ranks of those who LOVE this. Smooth, simple, wonderful harmonies, nice contrast between the two voices.

It most definitely is. This has been a longtime favorite album in our house.

Great song. Everything works - words, vocal, music. A small work of art with a timeless quality. And it's funky. Music to howl at the moon to.

Sorry to all of you who don't like this song, but I think it's fantastic, especially with Natalie Merchant in the background. Yeah, it's simple, but the melody and the harmonies are very well done. Keep it coming, RP. I'll turn it up every time.

If we weren't allowed to have an opinion, I reckon this posting option wouldn't be made available. And if all anyone ever posted was "I love this" ... we'd be a bunch of Stepford Listeners. Vive Diverse Opinion!

This may mean that a person has very high standards, is extremely spoiled, is a typical American (New Yorker, anyway), yadda yadda. Simple as that. It shouldn't 'ruin it' for anyone, unless you're extremely thin skinned, paranoid, psychotic or have some persecution complex. Or you're a Democrat. Just Kidding. Does any of this make sense? If you LIKE RP, Make a positive post and show Bill the money. Don't tune out or you run the risk of missing something different. By the way, some people sent inflammatory posts just to get a rise out of other listeners. Just like my kids. Comprende?

RP plays music for us all to enjoy, and if you don't, just change what you're listening to! Personally I've rarely heard a song here that I couldn't at least tolerate, but when I really don't like something I switch to my iTunes Library. Simple! And no one else is irritated or angered by my personal tastes and impulsive negativity.

For the record, all of this album and its Volume 2 sequel are Woody Guthrie lyrics, penned without music, that Billy Bragg & Wilco set to music at daughter Nora Guthrie's request. And having met Billy myself, I can tell you he is one of the most likable and human of rock stars out there - whether or not you like his voice.

I disagree - I bet there are plenty of people that can sing like him. I'm just glad more don't!

I do appreciate that some folk like this song. For me it's just is too much like one of those songs that can get stuck in your head when it's one you really wish wouldn't.

hear it covered by the flatlanders in concert...actually it was jimmy dale gilmore's son, who has a great voice.
love the song, regardless who sings it.

From what I've heard, that is Natalie in the background. I actually imagine it more as a old-school folk song, song in a completely different voice, kind of a soft, to-yourself kind of way.
