Hunstanton (Norfolk, UK): On the English East Coast (north Sea) and yet faces west so you can see the sunset over the North Sea.  Check it out on Google Maps

What?  Van Gogh is a household name, with libraries of books written about him and museums named after him.  He is a national hero in Holland.  Where is Nick Drake heralded?  I know you know about him, you know a lot about music.  The average person has never heard of him.  I would say there are at least a few thousand performers with more recognition than him.

I wrote that Van Gogh was among "artists unheralded during their lifetimes", not subsequent to their deaths.  True, though, to the average person, there are thousands of music performers more heralded than Nick Drake, but among musicians and those who follow music, he is pretty widely "heralded" - at least since the Volkswagen TV commercial.

Nick really must be the greatest unheralded artist there is, in any medium.  He is the gift that keeps on giving.  I think it is to RP's credit that they play him so much.  I don't hear him anywhere else on the radio, ever.  It's so ironic that the only place I ever do hear him besides here is in rom-com films and TV commercials.   I was introduced to him because about 10 years ago Moby put out a list of his most influencial CDs and this was one.  How lucky I was to read that.

Stange. Obviously Moby didn't pay attention to what he was listening to cause he didn't learn anything! i.e. Moby sux, Drake is great and they have musically absolutely nothing in common just in case there was any misunderstanding of what I was trying to say.

He said "Personally, of artists unheralded during their lifetimes, I consider Van Gogh the greatest." (Emphasis mine.)

Not to be nit-picky, but that's not really logical.  For one thing - he is now heralded - though he was not as much during his lifetime.  Also, if there are greater unherald artists out there, there would be little way of finding out about them.  Personally, of artists unheralded during their lifetimes, I consider Van Gogh the greatest.

Not a bad choice, but I have to go with Obadiah Bind-your-kings-in chains-and your-nobles-in-fetters-of-iron Barebones.

Place To Be

When I was young, younger than before
I never saw the truth hanging from the door
And now I'm older see it face to face
And now I'm older gotta get up, clean the place

And I was green, greener than the hill
Where flowers grew and sun shone still
Now I'm darker than the deepest sea
Just hand me down, give me a place to be

And I was strong, strong in the sun
I thought I'd see when day was done
Now I'm weaker than the palest blue
Oh, so weak in this need for you

I was lucking to be working in radio in the early 70s so I got a chance to hear Nick Drake from the freebie the record company mailed us. Somehow that album found its way into my bookbag and went home with me when it became apparent that no one liked it but me.

I lost it at some point and it was long out of print. Imagine my pleasant surprise when he popped up suddenly! Yay, he finally gets his due!

I find that Nick Drake also has that effect on me, what an awesome bunch of songs he leaves behind, although it's a shame he never lived long enough to enjoy the fame and fortune he deserved.

I put this album on three or four times, while my wife was giving birth to my son... it did a great work!
