Another two songs that seemed inseperable were "Sho-Be-Do" and "Candy-O"

On the vinyl, they blended right into each other to form the end of the album. They HAVE to go hand in hand...

Dunno if it's still common, but back in the days when this album was recorded, lots of recording studios used a variety of speaker configurations for mixdown, including mono and stereo car speakers. Sorta strange seeing a megabucks mixing console with a 6" x 9" oval car speaker in a cheap plywood box sitting on top of it.

thats correct- the massive speakers mounted in the wall at the front of the control room aren't used for critical listening so much. Most sessions will have 2 pairs of skrs on the console 1 of which will be the engineers prefered set - studios typicaly have many types or the engineer will bring their own high end studio monitors. And .. will also have 1 cheapo in the middle for listing in mono on small 4-6" speaker.

I heard a story once about the 'Cars' and how during final 'mix down' they would use 2 car speakers as reference monitors towards the goal of getting a sound that would sound good on car speakers..

I wonder if this is true...

with Kasim Sulton on Bass and Todd Rundgren as singer. No lie. I love the Cars, and Ric Ocasek, and think it would be hard to pull this off, but Todd is so good, I believe he could get it done.

I'm really dating myself and clearly going against the grain of most listeners here by saying that this version was not the first one I heard, nor the one I like best. Red House Painters cover this song and I think give it a nicer feel. I was just wearing diapers in the early 80's, what can I say, it's not my fault! A great song by any measure though.

I've always found it very hard to see anything to like about this group, and time has not improved the situation at all. Bland corporate new wave with a distinct lack of personality, little in the way of chops, no discernable world view, weak melodies, anemic hooks, cheesy arrangements, etc.

In other words, the musical equivalent of a meal at one of those chain theme restaurants with all kinds of "crazy" stuff on the walls: not horrible in any easily defined way, but at the same time horribly contrived and uninspired. Too much flair! Or not enough ...

Strangely enough, I always found Ric Ocasek's solo stuff a lot more interesting than anything the Cars did. It was still weak and forgettable, but it seemed to have at least a little more bite.
