Like listening to Jeff's father on RP, I wouldn't mind listening to Rufus' father as well (or is his music more suitable for KPIG?).
It took me some time to appreciate the way Rufus treats this song, but I like it more and more. It's certainly emotional but at the same time rather down to earth and straight forward, which is a nice contrast with the lyrics. Sounds very sincere this way.

Bill - 5 words: Play The John Cale Version - it should have been on the soundtrack (it was the version in the movie) so go back to the Leonard Cohen tribute album "I'm Your Fan" where Cale's version first appeared. Peace

If u listen to the lyrics I think you'll find that it's not a religious song. Maybe it is depending on your point of view...

I am not so sure that it is as about religion as people are making it out to be...
I think it's really about people and happens to be borrowing from religious imagery....

I really like this version. The Shrek theatre release and video/DVD actually have different versions by different artists. This one (the video/DVD version) is better (IMHO).

Nice to hear a religious-themed song on RP. :)

I've come to the inescapable conclusion that I dislike *all* versions of this song - regardless of who sings it.

This may be one of those songs that begs for a multitude of interpretations. My favorite rendition is still Jeff Buckley's, but, every time I hear it, I flash back to when a much younger incarnation of myself proclaimed in front of a group of college friends, that, "Leonard Cohen is God!"...and took ribbing for that burst of exuberance for months afterwards.

Religous themed songs aren't my preference (no more guilt based religions please :D )
This song is pretty though, which brings me to Leonard Cohen, great song writer.
I'm meandering but I really wish Joni Mitchell would sing Suzanne
:) :)

Bleeech.
Stick with Cohen or Buckley. Much much better. Rufus just doesn't have the sadness in his voice that this song requires.

Rufus is perfect for the Radio Paradise mix! Last year's CD, "Poses," was solid from start to finish.

I uploaded this and the John Cale version, which I also like a lot; I didn't care for the Buckley version as much. Good melodic song (and I do sneak it into my church music occasionally). |
