I was in high school when this came out and it was, and still is, a milestone record. It made me realize there was much more interesting music out there than the garbage played on commercial radio. It made me seek it out and I'm the better for it. Thanks Matt!

The version of this album I bought back in 1983 (as shown by huebdoo) had a different (better) cover drawn by Mat Johnsons brother Andy. And what an album it was, becoming my favourite for most of that year and well into the next. I would particularly recommend the track Uncertain Smile with Jools Holland on piano. |

How can you NOT love this? the simple beat machine reminds me of an earlier time in Techno music. The The was an amazing band and this album
is my absolute favourite ... I can remember playing Soul Mining over and over again ... Chanting along with the tribal beat
Simply amazing work |

I suddenly realized that the M&Ms marketing folks have me pegged. *sigh* Well, at least I'm not too old to be a part of a viable marketing group...yet.

Still remember the night my friend first put the needle to the vinyl on this album. Will obtain this disc on every format that exists in the future.

The song I heard in a record store in Cambridge in 1985 that got me hooked on TheThe. Never stopped listening to them since then.
Such a wonderful song. Such a great album start to end.
I've been playing it semi-regularly since 1985, and have never gotten tired of it.

I had a similar cassette purge a few years back. One of those great attic cleaning projects. Hmm. What to do with hundreds and hundreds of cassettes (quality that can only be compared to mediocre compared to cds, mp3s, or even lps). Tossed the whole lot in the trash. Kinda sad at the time, but now with over 1,000 albums in wonderful, 21st century digital format, all mourning has passed.
Thanks for the memories . . . |

What do you all think, is it optimistic or pessimistic? I think it's intentionally obscure in that respect. In the years of teenage angst, I took it optimistically... And contemplative it was, including Giant. |
