True, the movie (directed by wim wenders) is great, saw it in a small theatre. Quite impressive. I have mixed feelings about Ry Cooder regarding the bvsc. On one side I'm grateful he used his access to the media etc. to bring attention to some great cuban musicians, on the other hand I don't think his playing always adds to the bvsc tracks...

My feelings exactly. As a result of hearing this song on RP, I felt compelled to see the documentary. I was entranced by the music and the stories that the musicians told. I was particularly interested in the reaction of the musicians when they came to America (like New York city was some place not of this world, which I would agree with them on!). I cannot believe that these artists were largely forgotten in their land!

I agree with your comments about Ry Cooder. I applaud his efforts in getting these artists together, but he should not have inserted his slide guitar in what was otherwise an entrancing album and film. The slide guitar sticks out like a sore thumb in these songs (not this one as much, but in others it is terrible), and ruins the dream of these songs as being played back in the 40s and 50s during the artists' heyday.

I want to go to Cuba some day. I think it is a shame that both America and Castro cannot just let the political issues fall away and reunite these two countries culturally and economically.

Try "Casa de la Musica" in Santiago de Cuba.

I went in 2002 and it was the real thing, i.e. very little tourists.
I still recall when a local band playing an amazing version of ... "Hotel California"

I also remember a sentence painted on the wall: "No pedimos la atencion, la provocamos" which roughly translates as "We don't ask for attention, we provoke it"

To paraphrase Father Mulcahey: who could listen to the first two bars of "Chan Chan" and not feel changed?

All of the BVSC artists are terrific in their own right. I bought two Ruben Gonzalez CDs after seeing his piano wizardry on the BVSC DVD.

what would someone find today in detroit, looking for the old motown sound?
or around st. mark's place, looking for pure punk?

perhaps it's a generation lost to the march of time ...

When it arrives at the right moment (like it does now) this can be the most heartwarming music that exists.

The modern (Ry Cooder) version of the Buena Vista Social Club is sort of a fiction, like the Monkees. Sure, they toured as BVSC a little, but really the way to think of it is individual artists who share and play in each other's backing band. Eliades Ochoa has many solo albums, from before and after Ry, as do many of the BVSC players.

That said, if you buy an Ochoa album with this song "Chan Chan" on it, it will be a different version. Not necessarily a bad thing...

So, the Monkees are not credited with any songs? When BVSC plays together, shouldn't they get credit as such? The Travelling Wilburys did. Temple of the Dog did. Velvet Revolver does.
I agree with the previous post that this should be credited to BVSC. Take a look at the top of the screen. Which cd is listed?

BTW, I think the proper craving might be a pulled pork sandwich and a mojito. 8)

the documentary about the making of this album is really worth a watch. I know that the occasional subtitles can be annoying to some but the message is worth the (very minor) effort. I challenge you to not be affected by the stark existence in modern Cuba. Please, let's end the silly political games, Mr. Castro. Let your people be FREE!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me? What about lifting the stupid economical blockade. I got family in uiba and they are all Revolution supporters..they definitly don't want a Batista back or mafia interventions, so what is it going to be?
