One of the VERY FEW Bowie songs I like.

My girlfriend is a few years younger than I am and, while her siblings all listened to classic rock (for the most part), she had never heard this song. She didn't really like it, so she asked to change the sation. I siad "hey, this is classic Bowie.....ok go ahead". Then she asked "Does Major Tom come back?" I had to sadly explain that he doesn't and that he ends up lost in space. Then I realised that I feel that way everytime I hear this song. Gotta love Bowie. (sorry for the lengthy annecdote)

Classic!

Sometimes the lyric is hilariously misheard as

"Clown control to Mao Tse Tung."

Now that Bowie has faded to becoming only an occasional radio presence, it is increasingly clear how unique he actually sounded.

Thanks for playing Major Tom today... I always liked the far-out dreamy quality of the song, and the astronaut's slow realisation he will never see the earth again. After losing Columbia on Saturday, it was a nice reminder how both brave and foolish we are, and how we still keep trying to explore, learn, and live.

Thanks again, and peace.

A FITTING SONG TO PLAY TODAY, JUST A FEW DAYS AFTER THE TRAGIC LOSS WE ALL SUFFERED. THANK YOU FOR PLAYING THIS

This is a bit sad after what happened so recently now - but it's still a great song, no doubt about it.

Maybe I'm hyper sensitive right now, but given the events of the last few days, I consider the playing of this song to be in incredibly poor taste.

Every time I hear this song, I kind of chuckle... my brother (Tom, oddly enough) is a Major in the Air Force. altho he isn't in the astronaut program, he did go to Test Pilot School, and is a test pilot for the Air Force version of the V-22 Osprey. When he got his promotion to Major, he was thrown a "Major Tom" party...
