I heard they quit making music because they'd made all the money they ever wanted. Anybody know if that's true? If so, it's a shame. Would love to have more Portishead...

Mmm - now I'd kind of told myself that I didn't like Portishead. Think I might have to reconsider that position.
Lovely angst laden stuff.

I'm giving this a 7 or 8.

Cripes, if I wanted to feel this annoyed, I would just listen to Tori Amos

I remember buying "Dummy" back in September/October 1994 and listening to it for months on end. For its time, it was a really groundbreaking record. Everyone I know who has this album says its one of their all-time favourites. Every track on the album is great, but this is absolutely the best song. I love the bass during the instrumental part in the middle.

Incidentally, I didn't care that much for the "Portishead" follow-up. To my ears, the instrumentation felt too laboured-over and Beth Gibbons sounded like a witch on some of the tracks, modulating her voice just for effect rather than purpose. Her solo album was much better.

It seems I will be adding to what makes the world go 'round here with my comment.
I think this number sounds like someone testing her voice to see if she might be able to make some of the notes. But "singing"?? As in a finished product? Thumbs down for me. Sounded more like a Breathy-LiZ-R test which she passed exhibiting mega breathiness.

I think their self-titled album from 1997 was absolutely glorious, and I very highly recommend anyone who enjoyed Dummy check that out. Amazing tracks to be found..in fact, RP should really start playing some stuff off of it. Come on Bill! More Portishead for the hungry children! Maybe some All Mine, Cowboys, or Humming?

DJ, vocals and a guitarist. The percussion is pretty much all samples and drum machines. They had a bass player sit in on this song. Otherwise they're usually using real deep synth bass. They hire a back up band for their live sets. Same band that's touring with Robert Plant right now.

I absolutely love this song but I can't help but be reminded of Lori Petty taking a powder shower in Tank Girl, right before she kisses Naomi Watts. Great Movie and great soundtrack IMHO.
