Someone here must be on top of this situation.
"orient" simply means "east" like occident means "west", derived from old french which in turn derived it from latin.
Having said that I know that certain words can become pc or non-pc regardless of their original meaning. I have never considered "oriental" as derogatory nor have I ever heard anyone use it in a way which implied that it is was meant to be derogatory. |

Strange beautiful music! Old school on acid.

One of the very few good songs in this LP. I'd save "Hill groove" too, but maybe nothing else in this LP is really worthwhile. The version of "Sleepwalk" that got played sometime here is yucky (I like the one by Larry Carlton much more - maybe it's the original one?).
All of this IMHO, of course.
And I say that even when he's my favourite guitar player. But this LP sucked. If you want to hear something good, get the latest one ("Is there love in space?"). Much better.

the word "oriental" used when referring to someone of asian descent has become viewed as offensive or derogatory. there are two main reasons for this:

2. because the term "oriental" was used by imperialist european & american cultures who thought the eastern cultures to be inferior to their own.

at any rate, good song. i don't think satriani is trying to use the word to be offensive -- especially because a melody is an inanimate object & "oriental" is still an acceptable adjective for that usage.
If I recall, his wife is Asian.

It was my understanding (though I may very well be incorrect) that "Oriental" refers to stuff (not people) from the Orient, which is a region stretching form the Middle East to the Far East. Or maybe it's people to the east of the Ural Mountains? And those of us to the west are "Occidental," I believe.
As to it's PC-ness...step 1)Just don't call a person, "Oriental" if you're worried about it, and 2)Throw political correctionism in the garbage. |

I think it may be an originality of style - there is a lot of blending of styles in Joe's work, and that may be too much of a good thing.
Skill is not everything. The guitar solo in 'Sympathy for the Devil' is NOT hard to play - but it speaks to me in a way that Satriani never will!! |

Not that familiar with Satriani, but like this. If y'all forget who he is, and whatever baggage that goes along with that, I think it is a decent piece of guitarwork.
Maybe there is a little guitar shredding thrown it--maybe that's braggadocio, but I think if you just heard this song, alone on its own, without knowing who it was, (and without an inherent dislike of the guy) that it stands up as a pretty good piece of work.
Not a Michaelangelo, or a da Vinci. But it doesn't suck either. IMHO.

If there were one artist and one song that should never, ever be played again, it would be Joe Satriani and it would be this song.

I'm somewhere in the middle on this. Still feel great instrumentalists need great songwriters-slash-collaborators to steer them. Clapton immediately comes to mind. |

oh yeah... i know it (he taught Hammett as well). to my ears though:
Satch = technical genius w/ no soul to his music,
Vai = both technical & soulful, and then some. |
