Heh, my buddy and I used this in a movie short last summer for an exterior shot panning across a street scene in the late 40s. Good fun!

The sets have been pretty ok so far. But. At last!! something that deserves top marks
Thx Bill
(for lack of horn playing bananas or smilies)
Addendum:
I know its pointless really trying to explain Jazz, and less so to someone like PG. But at least you should understand that from
1) Head
2) Improv
3) Head
The part 2) should work with the 'head' that is still sounding in the listeners brain. It is not,as you seem to think, just a random series of notes for 10 mins. |

Bill, thx for playing this! Love the Bird, more of him please, especially late at night. I'm a night owl; there's nothing like some Bird, or Miles, or Keith Jarret, or Coltrane, or the Duke, or Jazz Messengers, etc., to make the night fly by.
Love jazz, its hard to find anymore, except for internet radio from Canada and a few other sites.

As a Louisiana native, it is unusual that I don't care that much for jazz, as a rule. HOWEVER, this is beauty. True beauty.

Haha, right back at you from the other direction! I guess it's all about what you can relate to the most. |

Knew next to nothing about jazz until recently and thought that was plenty.
Then I listened to a John Coltrane song on a reccomendation and recognised some real class and my previous ignorance.
Can't see myself ever being a jazz-fiend but now that Im aware of people like Coltrane and Parker I'll always welcome a well-executed smattering of the stuff.

Nah. I admire your principles, but you're ignoring the obvious fact that he trolls these boards looking to get a rise by making inflammatory comments on some of the most fundamentally sound music in existence. If his game is looking for a rise, those of us who blast back are playing along.
Even Constitutional freedom of speech rights have limitations. Constant acrimony with neither support nor explanation is akin to yelling "Fire" in a crowded room. You oppose current administration policy, that's your right. You oppose government in general, you're an anarchist. That's our troll.
All that aside, the Bird laid down some of the most sublime music and this is a shining example. Thanks, RP, for sharing it with us. |

What part of "musical diversity" did you not understand? You can say that you don't like this song, or that you don't like jazz, but saying that no jazz should be played here is tough to defend. This is a station of musical diversity, and that is what most of us listen to this station for.
This is refreshing, and why I listen to RP. I am not a big fan of jazz, but a little bit every once in awhile is like spices on food.... |

I agree. This opening and closing melody is called the "head" in jazz lingo. Jazz standards like Bloomdido generally adhere to this pattern:

Sometimes they play the head in the middle of the song as well.

Anyways, I was absolutely thrilled to hear Bird on RP, and especially this song. It's one of the most joyful, catch melodies of all the jazz standards I know.
Thanks! |

Jazz is all about improvisation. If it doesn't have improv, it's not jazz. Be-bop is all about improv at tempos that make all but the most incredibly skilled fall by the wayside. In fact, be-bop came about as a means to keep the less skilled (read white) players OUT of the top of the jazz world.
Listen to the opening and closing melody. See where the musicians go from there. Listen to the lengths of their musical thoughts, to the way they stay true (or not) to the basic tune from which they started. Listen to their use of all the elements they have available to them, from harmony to rhythm, to ...
Jazz challenges the listener as well as the musician. It's not for everyone, and not for every frame of mind. But when it comes together, like it does in this tune, it's as incredible as music gets.
Sorry for the ramble... |
