Meh - Another display of guitar wankery. Yeah, Pat Matheny can play. So can a lot of people.

There's a live DVD of a show from the most recent tour. GET IT!!! My wife and I saw this tour in Greenville and it was the best Metheney show I've seen yet (out of four)! The current line up is amazing and should not be missed.
I was at one of his nights at the Winery in San Jose - great show, the best I've seen him play. And the venue (the old Paul Masson Winery, famed from many an old jazz concert video) was perfect. A still, fine, California evening and Pat - bliss 8) Before the show, you could wander up to the stage - even read the set list beside Lyle's keyboards. They included "September Fifteenth", to my utter delight... |

some of his stuff is pretty interesting, but so much of it veers way too close to "easy listening".... almost like an elevator version of Al DiMeola at times. i guess it just depends on your mood.

Ouch. This is among the many cool sounds I've missed over the years where RP has brought me back in the loop. I don't know whether to love RP for shaking me out of my tree or to resent it for making me feel clueless. OK....RP is awesome!

same for me....except for that hang-gliding part.
I'v really enjoyed Metheny (and Mays) ever since. More play in RP is fine with me. |

There's a wedding scene at night, with paper lanterns and twinkly lights, and Kevin's character is dancing with the bride to "It's For You" by Pat Metheny. It was the first time I'd ever heard the guy, but it opened a door for me that never closed again.
That was a cool soundtrack. The movie was alright also. "It's For You" is positively one of Mays/Metheny's best, IMHO. |

I used to love Pat Metheny, and there are still some songs of his that I enjoy, but I find that most of them seem like he's just noodling around with the same old sounds. Metheny's playing style is instantly recognizable, but a bit boring I'm afraid.

I've myself have blown opportunities to see him. :( Too busy, tickets are too expensive, etc. Bad excuses. I should have went with my buddies to see him during his "Offramp" tour, but oh well. I have his live "Travels" Cd which gives me an idea what he would have sounded like live. That's something. I guess.

Love his technique and the mood his music creates, no matter where I am or what I'm doing. And if I wasn't such a big chicken, that hang-gliding experience would be my idea of the perfect Metheny setting, although he does lend himself to sunsets on the California/Oregon coast...

I also got turned on to this group back in the early '80s. Went to see them on their First Circle tour. Show started with all the band members entering the hall from different corners, all playing different beats on different types of drums. As they approached the stage, the rhythms also moved closer and closer together, until at the moment they reached center stage they all hit the same rhythm and launched into the first song on the album. Wonder how many rehearsals it took to get that trick down just right.
Saw them do that in Vancouver . I uploaded the "First Circle" title track, but got back a "Sorry". Too long perhaps.

Still my favorite Metheny album. Though his work with Dave Holland on "Beyond the Missouri Sky" certainly is right up there on my list.

No need to wait. Heck, I got into Metheny while I was in high school(early 80's). Just stumbled onto hearing his 1977 Pat Metheny Group album while browsing in some record shop. The guitar sounded "unique", it was closer to rock than jazz and there were hooks a plenty. A bunch of albums and about 15 CD's later, I still enjoy him very much. :) |
