I just can't figure why Over the Rhine and the Cowboy Junkies get such rave reviews here, but Lucinda Williams gets trashed. Listening to them they have a lot in common- depressed lyrics, hard luck stories, very capable female singers, and good writing. Not to mention all the production and arranging of the not insubstantial musical talent. Go figure. Must be anti- something.
Haters.
Classism. something must explain this, and it ain't bad voice, bad singing or bad songwriting.

Lucinda Williams doesn't get trashed here more than anyone else - particularly The Cowboy Junkies.  Re-read the commentary on their songs.

Now that I've moved to Portland, this weekend may very well be my last chance to see them in a while—-wish I could afford to go!

You can play as much Over The Rhine as you want Bill. I never get tired of them.

A great album from one of my all-time favorite bands. Not a bad song on it.

OTR was my first RP "discovery." I have been a fan of both ever since.

Actually, if her voice reminds me of anyone it would be Kris McCay — which RP would play some of her.

Okay...so I'm guilty if anyone has made this comparison..............I was rapt in thinking it was Norah Jones..

Sorry, but I don't see any connection whatsoever....this woman can really sing.

Never heard them until I saw them headline for HEM... liked HEM better of course, but Over The Rhine was good!  I own a couple of their CDs now.

Great set of music, with Ani Difranco and The Decemberists...

I first heard this group listening online to WAPS from Akron and I've become a fan of their music, I'd love to see them live. The cut "Jesus in New Orleans" is the best on this album, in my opinion.

The stylistic excesses of this singer can become a bit much at times, but I still consider this group to be one of the more rewarding discoveries made theough Radio Paradise. Where else would I have heard any of their work, not living in Cincinnati (give praise). Several years ago, while in thrall of this album, OTR played a scarcely announced gig in a small club about one block from my house, in Berkeley. A once in a lifetime opportunity. Peter Rowan was in the audience, also taking advantage of the chance to see someone he had heard of.

Sounds like Lucinda Williams on vocals; is it?
Nice cover art.

I was thinking "Wow, a Lucinda song I enjoy." Don't know if it's her or not, but it does sound just like her, only slightly better.
