It looks like he was the first one to record it.

Mournful? Dismal?

I'd hardly call Big Joe Turner either of those lugubrious terms.

That is a big word, though...

This is the original "Shake Rattle and Roll" song that was issued before R & B was accepted by the mass media. Then, Bill Haley and the Comets took this song and (along with Rock Around the Clock) used it to introduce Rock and Roll to American teens. I always thought that the Joe Turner version was better. Thanks Radio Paradise for going back to the original sources of our classic songs. Maybe you could play Ma Thornton's version of "Hound Dog" that later propelled Elvis to stardom.

Of course Haley also, er, "cleaned up" the lyrics. For a comparison (click here)

Clearly, the lyrics aren't the point here.

Not at all. This song is sublime - driving beat, killer piano, lyrics and all.

Excuse me, I have to go shake, rattle and roll now.

This song is full of joy and fun. A superb "10".

One thing I just notice of this classic tune is.......it's run length seems longer than the usual "oldie" 2:25 min.

Unless this was the "long version"

The first time I put a Big Joe Turner lp on the turntable and played it nice and loud, I could just feel the strength of his voice penetrating right thru me like a knife through a pat of butter! Fantastic music!!!

Yes, there are a lot of these kinds of stories -- black blues musicians whose music was pirated by white rock artists who then popularized the music. And the original versions almost always were better.
Two other good examples of this are Erma Franklin's "Piece of My Heart" hijacked by Janis and Irma Thomas' "Time is On My Side" -- she made a mint off the Stones' version but hers is far superior.
