Ever the since the movie "10", all I can visualize are Bo's bodacious ta-ta's.

La Valse is a better piece

La Valse is indeed awesome. Only heard it once over 20 years ago in music class, but I remember it well. His string quartets also swing...

I just did, from The Best Band You Never Heard. We'll see if it makes the cut (I don't have a lot of luck).

Actually the most appropriate forum would be "Name a song that starts out slow, and ends up rockin!! "
Now I was into classical before I ever go into any rock, so I had thought of "Bolero" of course, but didn't consider the suggestion appropriate. Little I knew.

It's been a very, very long time since I've commented on a song here, but hearing Ravel followed by Beck's Bolero was sublime. Thanks Bill.

I once heard someone on the radio (so it must be true!) that the reason this song is considered so sexy is that is the same rhythm as lovemaking. That and the climatic finish. Now every time I hear this, I can't shake that thought from my mind. Beats Bo Derek, I guess.

I also recently heard a review of this CD on NPR.

Ravel's Greatest Hit: The Ultimate Bolero

Haven't bought it yet, but will Check it out on Amazon.

I did a lot of research to find the "best" recording of Bolero recently. I didn't realize until I put it in the CD drive that I couldn't play the Super Audio format. Hey! I'm gonna try it on this PC. Apparently not.... Anybody in the market for an outstanding NY Philharmonic recording of Ravel in Sony Super Audio, drop me a line! AndrewKoransky wrote:

Sounds cool. Now all we need is Beck's Bolero. Please, Bill. Jimmy Page rocks!

He did it! Bill did it! Beck's Bolero. Bill, YOU are a genius!

One of my least favourite pieces of classical Music. I remember all the old ladies back in england getting all moist when the ice-skating was the only thing to see on the telly featuring Torvil and dean ("oh he's such a nice boy, what does he see in that girl") Shudder, what a bad memory... and I hated the piece way before then. Slow and Dull. Lets have some Satie or something.

I played this as a piano duet once, very tongue in cheek, in a bikini and a sarong with plaited hair like Bo Derek at a Conservatorium concert. It doesn't seem quite so long when you make a joke out of it. I can't knock Ravel though. Did you know that he was too short to be a soldier in the war so they made him an ambulance officer and as a result he witnessed alot of what is grotesque and horrific about war? La Valse is a better piece and has shades of distortion that reflect his macabre experiences. It is vastly more interesting (and slightly shorter) than Bolero.

I agree... I learned in school that this was written as an exercise for orchestras; but it f*&^%%n kicks ass at high vol on the headphones! I think this positions Ravel as a major jazz musician before his time!

Thanks for playing it Bill!

I think this was some kind of sick joke on the part of Ravel.

This is my absolute least favorite piece of music of any kind. I'm glad I was at lunch when this was playing.

I once heard a "Classical Music" station DJ once call this 15 minutes of monotony.

I like it.

Oh dear - one of those tracks forever tainted by an accompanying image - this one by Jayne Torvil and Christopher Dean poncing about doing something called ice dancing which for some reason is an Olympic sport - what would Ravel have thought??!!

Funny, for me, this music is not "tainted" but enhanced by the image of Torvil and Dean's brilliant performance.
