i'm always so excited when i hear the intro to this one, and then it turns out to be VM instead of Beck... somewhat of a disappointment.

Ditto. ;)

Is it me or the bass pattern at the beginning and at some other places in the tune reminds me the popular "Stand by me" ? The rythm is the same, and the notes similar, altough they are not the same.

I didn't notice it with this song, but I do hear "Stand By Me" in The Police's "Every Breath You Take" (as well as a few others like Paul Simon's "Slip Slidin' Away" and a lyric or two from Zep's "D'yer M'ker").

I get so tired of hearing this sort of unabashed plagiarism called "sampling" and then lauded as if some talent is involved. Beck should come up with his own melodies before he can be compared with--much less favorably compared with--the masters.

He did come up with his own melody for Jackass. Listen to Beck's vocals -- they don't follow those of this song in the slightest. The sample is only part of the whole picture and works essentially the same as a rythmn guitar would.

I like Van and I like this song. Roll me over, Romeo.

All he did was loop the 1st bar. The melody, lyrics and changes were all original.

I'd like to see a steel cage match with Bette Midler and Whittney Houston.

Van Morrison makes me retch. This is OK though because Beck redeemed it.

I see why bill had this follow moby as the intro and syn piano work are sooo similar. but van and moby is like milk and vinegar (moby is the milk).

Its puke time . . . a three. only cause van is the man is it saved from a one.

whats next, neil singing beck?

I feel totally lost...love Van Morrison; somehow managed to NEVER hear this before; agree the beginning sounds exactly like Stand by Me; don't like this version at all; think Van's phrasing is all wrong and stilted; clearly it is from his very early days and he was still finding himself as an artist. At best, this is an archival curiousity for me, not something I'd want to listen to with any frequency. Or at any frequency, except one only dogs can hear.

Funny, on AM radio in 1966 it was Van's version of this song that got some play. Loved it then, still love it. I also love Dylan doing this. As for Jagger imitations....whew!

That's not doing justice to Morrison. He and Jagger started their career at about the same time and were just sounding pretty much the same, in the beginning, singing those bluesy songs. They hadn't discovered rhythm and blues (and folk) that long ago and were obviously exploring it in a similar way (to find their own path later on).

when i heard the beginning, I also thought it was jagger.

There are very few songs that quickly catch my attention like this one did. I at first thought it was another re-mix like the "Beatles day in a life of." Sadly, this time around, I wasn't as pleased.

This is one of the only times I have ever heard a Dylan cover that was actually worse than the original... And that is saying a lot! I would much rather hear Bob sing this, in his broken, but authentic zoice. This is cr*p! :puke:

I know that I am the umpteenth person to comment on this, but I thought I knew a thing or two about Van Morrison and his catalogue, and yet I have never heard this cover tune before. Leave it to RP to give me an education!
