No, actually it's a great Townes Van Zandt tune.

Never thought I'd hear TVZ here -- or anywhere! We had a guy over at the house the other day to do some work, and he heard TVZ on the radio and gave us a discount on that basis alone. As an Austinite, I say long live the late great Townes Van Zandt. Best songwriter ever.

Great to hear TvZ on RP. Have been noticing more country flavored tunes here, which I think is a dandy thing.

Speaks well of the company here that this garners an 8.2.

Whose voice should he have used for his song?

Anyone catch the recent documentary on Townes? I watched it a few weeks ago, very illuminating. It peeled back the layers of mystery surrounding Townes, at least somewhat. He was a pretty fascinating individual. Funny as shit, too. I think people will be studying his music for many years to come.

edit: Film is titled Be Here to Love Me and was made by a woman named Margaret Brown in 2004.

Great Documentary. He had a lot of tragedy in his life but he always seemed to rise above it.I love some Townes.

After he wrote this song he would always say he never knew what it meant,it just came to him.

Same here. I would really love to hear some cuts from Emmylou's earlier albums (Pieces of the Sky, Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Quarter Moon) on RP.

Although I am a huge fan of everything Emmylou, I would love to hear stuff from those early albums as well. I wore them out on vinyl.

i heard this song yesterday as i was struggling with a sliding glass door. man i was happy to hear it. and the original is the best, because it expresses the wry resignation the best. though i love 70s emmylou

Dude, what's wrong with the voice? I love it.

Uh, bloody nothing! My point was that his is not the perfect melodic model some might expect or demand, but this alone is no reason to detract from the tune, or not play it here. Having just seen Willie Nelson in concert recently, I'm utterly thrilled to hear Townes' original. Absolutely outstanding.

Yeah, Flat has a point. Townes didn't have what one would call a classically trained voice. And I'd listen to Emmylou Harris read a phone book. But Townes wrote it so he gets to sing it. Fortunately there are many folks covering his songs. Any version of 'White Freightliner' is good, and 'Marie' is possibly the saddest song ever written. EVER.

Well said. Would like to hear more of Townes on RP. What an influence he had!

Townes manager was/is a freak and probably was the main cause of his downfall.

There is not nearly enough of this historic, landmark, watershed songwriter on RP.

I won't mention the multitudes of lesser songwriting talents that are played more frequently , but if I did that list would include, umm EVERYBODY!!
