This is a really quite a beautiful song, but often pariodied...sad really when you think about its origins.

I had to bump this from 8 to 10 because of the events of the last half hour.  My brother and I were arguing about recycling, and he tried to stomp off in a rage, and then this song came on.  I yelled at him to come back, I turned this song up, and all those layers of hostility and defensiveness just dropped away.

Any song that can de-fuse a potential war is a 10 in my book. God love ya, Mr. Belafonte.

The Day-Oh part gets a 1 because it reminds me of the gawd damn fuckin' 'Yankees. The rest of the song makes up for it 8

My wife just said, "Not my favorite Belafonte, but you can't help but think of..."

I was already dancing like Winona. I knew what she meant

Should have been the opening tune for Dr. No - considering things as they developed in the movie   ;-)

My parents used to have this and I would throw it on the Grundig and spinning it a lot. Back in 1964 I think. Years later saw the Kinks in LA and Ray woudl scream out Dayoh all show and people would yell back. It is infectious.

Did you guys in the US get the stop motion short to the Stan Freeburg version with the Dylan Rabbit as the bongo player and a sort of Speedy Gonzales mouse as the TOO LOUD singer?

Still cracks me up hearing this song 'cause that is what I see - like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kyn4KJzbL3c

Though the original was in clay-mation and a lot older than that as those Blue Peter presenters are long after I went to work.

Yeah, I remember Stan.  I used to play it on my show when I was a "50's" DJ at a local radio station.

And now, Beetlejuice aside, Harry Belafonte is an icon for me.  My parents tolerated his music, but it wasn't until years after I was out of the house that I could appreciate his body of work.  Thank you, RP - for playing this song, and for helping me remember why I love music so much. {#Notworthy}

Beetlejuice certainly was a tremendous film, but there is a lot more to HB as well.

Check out "Island in the Sun", "Jamaica Farewell" and if you want something to cause a good chuckle or two, try "Mama Look a Boo Boo"

"Harry Belafonte - All Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1"

Of course all you Jimmy Buffet fans already are familiar with a bunch of HB work
