This is a really quite a beautiful song, but often pariodied...sad really when you think about its origins.

I had to bump this from 8 to 10 because of the events of the last half hour. My brother and I were arguing about recycling, and he tried to stomp off in a rage, and then this song came on. I yelled at him to come back, I turned this song up, and all those layers of hostility and defensiveness just dropped away.
Any song that can de-fuse a potential war is a 10 in my book. God love ya, Mr. Belafonte.
Great Song-! Thank You.... Longtime favorite from my childhood.... PLUS Harry Belafonte was on The Muppet Show in the 80's...they did this song...it was the BEST visualization... Please play more often... Thanks again... RP adds a another smile to the day-!
Strewn across the vast landscape of my musical memory lie gems like this one, uncatalogued and therefore not readily retrievable (in other words, I have forgotten how much I like them!) Fortunately we have a pro on the job (Bill), pulling these out of his hat now and then, along with many cross-cultural jewels I would otherwise not even know about. Thanks, Bill!

Great song!! Belafonte's "Live at Carnegie Hall" alburm that includes this song is crazy good!
My parents used to have this and I would throw it on the Grundig and spinning it a lot. Back in 1964 I think. Years later saw the Kinks in LA and Ray woudl scream out Dayoh all show and people would yell back. It is infectious.
Did you guys in the US get the stop motion short to the Stan Freeburg version with the Dylan Rabbit as the bongo player and a sort of Speedy Gonzales mouse as the TOO LOUD singer?
And now, Beetlejuice aside, Harry Belafonte is an icon for me. My parents tolerated his music, but it wasn't until years after I was out of the house that I could appreciate his body of work. Thank you, RP - for playing this song, and for helping me remember why I love music so much.
