I'm not familiar with the Dead at all, but I am a longtime fan of Lyle. I instantly knew I didn't recongnize this song and wasn't aware of the album. Can't compare it to the original, obviously, but I like the song. However, if you want to hear some of the absolute best covers, best songs, best Lyle Lovett performances...all that and more, you gotta listen to his excellent double-album Step Inside This House. It was his tribute to Texas songwriters. Some of the best music I've ever owned. And mostly by people you've never heard of.

What, you mean other than the fact that Lyle can sing? |

I've never heard this version before - sent me running to the playlist to see what Lyle album this was from. Most excellent!

I'll say it for you then. This cover is better than the original. But then I'm not a big Dead fan. |

Something in the way he sings this ages the song....in a good way. You could truely believe this was some old folk/blues song dusted off from the shelves circa 1930 or so.

Just listen to the original. There's really nothing more to say, some songs just shouldn't be re-done.
Well, it is on a tribute album, after all. Remakes of their great works are kind of unavoidable. Should the tribute album only include covers of their less-than-great stuff? Would be lame, don't you think?

I liked Lyle even before I moved to Texas. Maybe I'm a geek, but it made me happy to learn that he lives only a few miles from me... our area and school district is named for his family. His homestead is as down to earth as his musical style.
Lyle covering a truly great Dead tune.. that's pretty close to perfect for me. |

Shocking to think I've never heard the original of this song. Only the excellent Counting Crows version and this one.

I wont say this cover is better than the orginal, but it is one of my favorite LL recordings, and I am a huge LL fan.
This CD is uneven but there are some other jems in there

i am pretty much a hard rock fan.
but a friend of mine dragged me to a Lyle Lovett show and i was absolutely floored. at least 10 musicians on stage at any given moment, and yet you could hear a pin drop. so subtle and so amazing. 10 years later, it remains in my top 5 best concert experiences. |
