That was interesting. But I would be very contented to go the rest of my life without hearing it ever again.
Come to think of it, I don't think it's possible to go the rest of my life without hearing it again in one form or another. |

I love Tom Waits, but.........I presume this is his impersonation of a beatnick stream of consciousness poem? The words are interesting, but it's NOISE!!
I don't see it as that, I see this song more as an ode to late night TV commercials (from before the days of infomercials) and street hawkers. I don't know how anyone could find song material there but Tom Waits isn't just anyone! |

Love him or not, there is simply no denying that this guy is always doing something new and interesting. Scarce few are the artists with a catalogue as interesting and wide ranging.
Personally, I hope the guy lives to be a thousand years old so I can continue to be trilled with what he does next.
To that ol questionÂ… what 10 recordings would you take to a deserted island/ At least two would be Waits records. Their timeless and grow better with each listen.

And, strangely enough, he ultimately won $2.5M because Frito-Lay had violated the "Midler tort", a legal precedent named after Bette Midler. Waits said he "Spent it all on candy. My mom told me I was foolish. I've always been foolish when it comes to money."

Listenable? Listenable! Brilliant! Years ago now, WSUW ran a series of his film scores. It was tremendous.
*edit: I'm also enjoying how young Waits looks on that album cover... |

Delightfully slippery salesmanship-yes? Reminds me of many used car salesman I've had the misfortune to work with. In all fairness-some actually do care. Gives me a chuckle nonetheless.
