"Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy.
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show?"

That would be DCI Gene Hunt. What an uncannily prophetic lyric.

This is my favorite Bowie song, and in my top 50 ever.

(The rest of this post refers to The Life Aquatic)

Love the original, and LOVE the Portuguese verion. I think I am one of about 4 people in America who liked this movie too . . .

4 other people? Hell no. Just like his other movies, this was another instant classic by Wes Anderson. The Portuguese-singing Bowie fan guy is Seu Jorge. The character produced in the imperfections of his vocal inflections give his voice such a deeply human feel. A deeply feeling sound. (I have to say it's also the flaws in Wes Anderson's characters which make them so deeply human.)

I didn't realize they were only Bowie songs.

Go rent/buy the VH1 Storytellers episode with Bowie. He opens with this, and knocks its socks off with his dead on vocals and Mike Garson doing the piano part beautifully. Much better than this version, even though I give this a 10.

That whole episode is marvelous. Bowie came through some dark, creative times and now is clearly happy with himself and in love with life. Worth seeing.

Yes, Mr. Wakeman had a long association with Guiness and is doing very well in rehab.

Seriously, he was my keyboard deity when I was in middle school and high school.

It's a Godawful small affair
To the girl with the mousey hair,
But her mummy is yelling, "No!"
And her daddy has told her to go,
But her friend is no where to be seen.
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seats with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen,
But the film is sad'ning bore
For she's lived it ten times or more.
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall.
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go.
It's the freakiest show.
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy.
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show.
Is there life on Mars?

I don't know about that. My wife and I both liked it, though we also found it confusing at times. Funny in a weird way.
We were about halfway through before I realized that guy was only singing Bowie songs.

If you turn up the volume really high as the track fades out ( in what used to be called 'the run-out-groove' ) you can hear an old-fashioned telephone ringing and a voice saying 'Yeah! That's the one!"

< and if you play it backwards it says 'get a life, get a job and stop being a dork'>

This is so touching, and brilliant, and genius. I never tire of it.

Even better? His version of it on VH1 Storytellers. He NAILS the notes and looks casual and happy while doing so. Proof that he's still got it.

Also, the Seal version is quite impressive, although subordinate.
