"Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes -
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume -
A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac -
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away"

Brilliant. Would love to hear more Weller on RP, esp. 'Wild Wood'

Man, what a set. Thanks, Bill.

If you young 'uns like this, Paul Weller at his best, the Jam Box Set is tremendous. Nothing like blasting this, followed by Town Called Malice, then Start, and having people ask you, "Who's that?" Jut smile and turn it up.

This is such a beautiful song!!! I'm talking Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World" Great here, on another plane

Did the Barenaked Ladies cover this song ever?

It has sort of a Barenaked Ladies feel to it.

Not to advocate heavy drinking, but a drunken state often does strip bare the truth -- and one's emotions.

I agree. I've only really gotten into them this year and I feel stupid for taking so long. Weller's writing and his unique delivery help make the songs just as relevant today.

There is also a decent version recorded on his recent solo tour.

Anyone who's spent any time at all freezing their unemployed butts off in an English flat should appreciate this one.
Great story and background. Sounds like you tell the flat story with more than a bit of empathy. If I keep spending my days posting on RP I'll be joining the council flat ranks.

Heard a "busker" player this in the London Underground last night - someone who might also be flat "squatting." The song had more impact than any song I've heard played for spare change. It really captured the song's crazed irony.

A 30 second search on AMG tells us The Jam first recorded this classic in 1980, Morrissey followed 11 years later.

BTW, this is among my very favorite RP turn-ons.

As much as I love Morrissey and The Smiths, I definitely prefer this version of the song.

Classic song. The lyrics always give me a chill of desolation.

A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls ...
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away ...
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude...
