Adding my thanks to the chorus. I love Monk and all his works, and the more classic jazz we add to the mix, the better as far as I am concerned. "Straight, No Chaser" is the cream of a very fine crop, and a superb choice to follow, complement and add depth to the fine Diana Krall and Joni Mitchell that preceeded it. Now: how 'bout some Coltrane and Mingus (both criminally absent from the playlist)?

And following it with Brother Ray's "What'd I Say" is also inspired.

(edit one month later:) Hmmm...same songs in same order? I sense laziness here....

I'll second the need for 'Trane and Mingus!

(This is awesome too, though!)

Coltrane definitely needs to be played. I dont know much about jazz but I know his stuff is immense.

'In a sentimental mood' would be most appreciated.

After waiting patiently through that Diana Krall song, this tune gets my mood up. For those of you unfamiliar with Monk, do yourself a favor and pick up a greatest hits disk of his. You owe it to yourself and the music community to become familiar.

Oh, of course a "10" my man, of course, but this especially. "Straight No Chaser" (even more than his other masterpiece, "Round Midnight") epitomizes everything great about Monk. It's a shame RP has only these few Monk pieces in their playlist; at the very least "Misterioso" and "Monk's Mood" should be added to this meager list. RP is in dire need of more and better classic jazz; their selection of Louis Armstrong is bland and obvious, and do you realize that there is NO (repeat NO) John Coltrane listed??? With all the crap pop they add all the time off of the LRC, you might think that a few worthwhile examples of REAL classic American music might slip in...sorry, I'll stop now, or my blood pressure will shoot up.

Oh GOSH this is HOT! The sole reason this is a 9 for me and not a 10 is because I've not quite warmed up to the warm tones of vibraphone jazz yet...

But I'm adjustin'

college, music appreciation class - the day's lecture included Monk and a bunch of other giants. reviewing my notes later that day in the dorm, my friend laughed hysterically at me b/c I spelled it "Felonius". So we parade over to the next suite where a classmate was and looked at her notes. She wrote "Colonus".

And there was the thicko MTV reporter who wanted to know who the Lonliest Monk was.
