This is Jazz, right?

See, I can't even classify the genre properly.

Maybe if you didn't try to classify it you'd enjoy it and maybe even understand it.

Monk's the man! Really appreciated hearing Straight, No Chaser last night. One of the chief reasons I listen to RP is for the eclectic blend of music, so naysayers can learn to be more tolerant.

For those who don't understand/appreciate jazz, try these CDs on for size and see if you don't change your mind:

Miles Davis - All Blues, In A Silent Way, Jack Johnson
Quincy Jones - Walking In Space

There are many more, but this is a good place for you to start in determining if there isn't room for some form of jazz in your life.

Back about 20 years ago, I had a Monk tribute album with covers by bands like NRBQ, and I quite liked it. I wonder if it's out on CD now ... I don't even remember what it was called any more.

Edit: Ah, here it is.

But dude, Jazz is so "ultra nerdy"...They say all music is mathematical, and isn't Jazz even, if you will, more so?

Oh, yeah...
Some really sophisiticated jazz here... Dig it!
I have a more rocking pure piano version somewhere, but this will do the trick of mood elevation, quite nicely, Bill -- and THANKS for making RP my one-stop music destination from morning to night!

All of this sort of jazz sounds the same. Yes, I appreciate the skill and the hours of practice. And the improvisation can certainly have its moments. Blah, blah. It still all sounds the same. You know what I mean.

I've tried to keep an open mind & listen to different jazz styles. However, when this type of jazz comes on I flash back to painful tooth probing, drilling, & grinding Novocain shots. I was only 5 at the time, but I still get the sweats thinking about it. This dentist might have been "cool", but he definitely didn't have a very good chair-side manner. This is about the only type of music that affects me like I'm chewing on foil.

I have my own painful memories of chidhood visits to dentists, too, none associated with music though. Your experience is a classic case of Pavlovian conditioning. In a way it's a good thing he didn't play music that's more popular, like the Beatles, for example. Cheers.
