C'mon, you chould wear blue velvet pants with avocado green loafers. I'll get the martinis ready. I guess I'll also get fired from work for drinking on the job.

Why does this sound like "Take Five" to me?

I think it's because the bass lines are very similar. They could be based on the same chords but it's hard to tell without playing them consecutively...

Smooth. All-out smooth.

What interests me about this song is the fact that the main piano riff is simple and devoid of any "jazzy rhythmic tricks" (syncopations, "swung" eighth notes, etc.) and still manages to sound jazzy just the same.

It's the chord progressions, I believe.

QUITE enjoyable.

I don't know if I'd say "pilfered". Jazz artists have been "borrowing" licks from other songs since it's inception. How many times do you hear nursery rhyme song snippets used in jazz solos?

The Us 3 album is really pretty decent. There's more than Cantaloop that's worth listening to. And I love the authentic opening intro "Ladies and Gentlemen, as you know, we have something special down here at Birdland tonight, a recording for Blue Note records."

I'm not absolutely certain NPR uses this particular version, but Latin jazz giant Mongo Santamaria does a well-known cover of "Cantaloupe Island" that might be what you're thinking of.

Uh... maybe because you need to listen to a little more jazz so you have more to compare it to. The two songs have horns, piano, bass, and drums in common. That's about it.

Okay, I feel like a total fool... had no idea that this existed other than the sampling of it for Us3's "Cantaloop". Now the title of their song makes SO much more sense.

Checkout Slimdevices.com. I have two squeezeboxes and love them. Even allows me to sync two stereos. Plus, the server software is open source. It will likely never become obsolete, because there is a community, outside of the slimdevices, that can keep the server sfwr updated. You can use the server even w/o a box, for free, to serve your music to you at your computer at work.

Also check out the Roku SoundBridge.

But before you buy either, be sure to check out ALL of the features and compatibility with your current computer system and stereo.

Oh yeah - nice to hear some Herbie Hancock on RP too!

They play a version of this on NPR leading into a program - I always wondered what the name of it was - I really like it, though I prefer the "NPR" version.

Thanks for the variety!

HA! In mine it's biddy biddy bop!
