Would help to actually LISTEN to the tune before giving half-assed statements :D |

Song either convey a mood that you Get, or they do not. This one does. Aching, longing pain. A song either catches your ear and your H EARt or it does not. |

It always strikes me how Talk Talk manage to wrap a less-than-perfect voice into sounds that complement it so well that it comes out like magic. Goes to show, music is more than the sum of its components.
I wouldn't rave about this song, but if it can be caught in the right spirit, it's amazing... a 7 to me.

I have repeatedly missed this song.
Glad I popped in.
A sublime album. As further evidenced by Physicgenius' perfectly timed and always true-to-form anti-tasteful and completely musically confused comments.

2nd only to perhaps The Beatles themselves has a band evolved so far in such a short space of time -- from '82 to '88 they went from synthpop to avant-rock. One of fave bands of all time.

First time I ever heard anything by Talk Talk was seeing the video for Talk Talk on MTV (it may have been one of the first videos I ever saw on MTV, back in the day when I actually watched it because they played a lot of cutting edge videos at times other than 2:00 AM in the morning). Anyway, I loved how, on the little block that MTV used to let you know what song, artist, album the song was from:
Talk Talk
Talk Talk.
I used to get a kick out of that. I always thought that they should have named their debut album "Talk Talk" instead of "The Party's Over." It would have been like this:
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
I was easily amused in those days.
Anyway, saw them open for Elvis Costello at the Omni in Atlanta, way back in the day. They've progressed quite a lot music wise since then. |

Not sure what anyone else means, but I mean THE best ever...lofty praise indeed, but deserved praise. Listen to "Spirt of Eden", start to finish. It's simply brilliant. |

Best album ever is a tie:
1) Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
1) Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Just stating a scientifically proven fact, so debate is futile.

I have to listen to it for a while more, but I'm inclined to agree and say that their second-to-last might just fit this description. I'm looking forward to getting Laughing Stock (their last) more than I've looked forward to an album in years. Would love to hear any comparisons between Spirit and Laughing Stock. |

I have to thank RP and comments from others here for introducing me to Talk Talk. I bought the Spirit of Eden CD (the only one from them I could find in Vietnam, and supposedly their best or second best) and it is an extremely fascinating, perhaps brilliant, album. I'm surprised that more people don't mention them and how they were doing things with sound that's quite amazing for 1988. One of my favorite musical "finds" the past few years. Thanks RP.
