More accurately, it means the musicians in question have adopted a sound in such a similiar fashion (note the word derivative) as to have created something that is lacking in any innovation or inherent originality.
Sure, all music has influences. Being inspired by something is one thing, taking it and bastardizing it (and blandly, at that) is quite another.

I just bought the album yesterday. It's awesome. Not a bad song on it.

Yup, nothing like a bit of Kasabian (that's ka-say-be-en Bill, not ka-sab-ee-en )
Just need some Club Foot now... oh yeah |

OK, so they found a groove - but nothing happens. After a few bars, boredom set in here.

Muscially and vocaly, this work great. I just don't find much enjoyment in the actual lyrics.

Sounds good to my ears, but I'm tired.
I'm having a hard time envisioning this performed live, at least in this arrangement... |

I have mixed feelings about this band. They're catchy and all, but it's almost like they're cleverly manufactured. They're not like rock star material, but they're just popular enough to sell. It's weird.

These guys have the most exciting sound I've heard in a while. There were a couple of songs on this disk (which I play incessantly in the car and feel like a badass every time) that sound like they could easily become part of a James Bond soundtrack. Groooooovy!

did anyone see these guys at lollapalooza yesterday? they played early in the afternoon when the temperature was 102 degrees! not enough to draw me out of the air conditioning... g love was, though.

LOL wow. Actually, I've heard 2 Keane songs on a couple of the ubiquitous Clear Channel stations here in the US, he's hopped the pond! |

care to expand on that?
i guess my point is born from aggrevation that this, lets face it, rather mediocre band are trumpeted (thanks to the combination of a major label backer and a sychophantic music press) as 'the future of music' and some how dangerous(!) and cutting edge. i truly despair if the future of British music is ripping off Primal Scream.
i'm sure in the US & elsewhere their exposure is barely enough to register so my fury may seem a little odd but if you had to put up with the ridiculous hype machine that the UK music industry has become i'm sure it would grate too. Just count yourselves lucky that you have not been forcefed Keane yet! .
