Heh, that's my rating system, too. Hence very few ratings in the range of 3 to 6. If I bother to rate, it's because I either love it or never want to hear it again. Usually the former.

can't stand this guy - his voice is okay, but he over-pronunciates (sp?) everything and it really grates on my nerves.
too repetitive as well.

"...and the only way to beat it is to bat it down...and the only way to beat it..."

That, and serotonin re-uptake inhibitors.

Good tune!

Thank you, RP! I've heard this song on local radio stations and loved it, but they'd never say who this was or the name of the song. I hate that - is it really too much to do for the listeners? Now I can add this to the collection.

A lot - most actually - of the songs on RP grow on me. But not this one. It shrinks on me. That refrain is grating!

Biography by Lee Meyer
Before emerging as a solo artist, M. Doughty (first name: Michael) was best-known as the frontman of the unique avant-garde group known as Soul Coughing. Spawned in 1992, Soul Coughing was formed after Doughty met his bandmates (Yuval Gabay, Sebastian Steinberg, and Mark de Gli Antoni) while working as a doorman at the Knitting Factory, a staple of New York City's hip underground music scene. Soul Coughing signed to Slash/Warner in 1993 after making a name for themselves on the local scene and attracting the attention of music labels with their fusion of rock, Doughty's beatnik-inspired lyrics, and elements of hip-hop and electronic music.

TOO MUCH INFO

In July 2002, Doughty released the limited edition live album Smofe + Smang: Live In Minneapolis. It featured a large selection of solo material as well as Soul Coughing classics. A book of poetry entitled "Slanky," which was initially self-released in 1995, also coincided with the live album. In 2003, more solo work surfaced in the form of the Rockity Roll EP, which was then combined with the Skittish album and rereleased with a handful of bonus tracks when Doughty signed to Ato records in 2004. In 2005, Doughty released his first solo effort to feature a band, Haughty Melodic, which contained fleshed-out studio versions of several songs debuted on Smofe + Smang.

Love this guy's voice for some reason. I had heard his solo stuff, but never anything from Soul Coughing...so when a SC song played earlier today I kept thinking "Where have I heard that voice before?" Now it's all coming back to me.

Great lyrics.

That Cuban girl
That brought me low
She had that skin so fine and red lips rose-like now
Her mouth was wide
And sweet as well
And now relentless hours of dreaming up her smell

And I feel as if I am looking at the world from the bottom of a well

Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down

Oh all the days
That I have run
I sought to lose that cloud that’s blacking out the sun
My train will come
Some one day soon
And when it comes I’ll ride it bound from night to noon

Aimless days, uncool ways of decathecting
Painless phase, blacked out thoughts you be rejecting

And, if you're wondering what "decathecting" means:

Is it that hard to understand...

He came to Kent April 2004 and it was amazing for me. Him and his guitar - acoustic really reveals the power of a voice and strength in lyrics. I really need the moola to purchase these cds.

Bought the album last month and am really enjoyning it. Lots of energy throughout the album.

I especially like the cut about ...it "makes me feel like Busting up a Starbucks."

If it weren't for the "beat it to bat it to beat-a da batter" chorus, I'd like it.

Doesn't tickle me. Can't say I hate it, but it really doesn't strike me enough to feel one way or the other. I forget this song the moment it's over, everytime I hear it. To each their own...

I didn't like this at first. But it's really growing on me.

And to you people who say this is overplayed on your local radio, where do you live? None of the stations are spinning Mike Doughty.

I picked it up due to its play here and I think it's one of my favorites of the year - great road-trippin' music. And the tune that Mike put on the Move On compilation last year rocked as well.

overplayed, but still catchy and nice. this song was my first guitar tab upload to harmony-central.com...yep all 3 chords of it. and mike's website informs us that he will be playing at the austin city limits music fest in late september, along with about 100 other bands that get airplay on radiopardise.

"Let her down in the old Velveeta"? Mike's kinda kinky, no?

Funny, sounds like Soul Coughing. Oh yeah. Not bad.

Agreed. I bought this CD and it was a bit of a disappointment for two reasons. 1) RP cherry-picked the best songs. I can't hold that against them, but there are some really blah songs on the CD. 2) Said blah songs tend to drag even the good stuff down since they indeed, do all sound the same to some extent. Unless you're a big-time fan, RP's efforts really should suffice.
