saw great show on PBS about the singer of this band and his father, who was a famous physicist— very good!

It's not the least bit amusing, nor do I need/want to listen to music to get depressed. Quite the contrary........

Meanwhile, Rebecca disses my LRC uploads without even letting any of you vote on them. Go figure.......

Eschewing "the" in their band name, breaking all band naming conventions....the impetuousness!

Makes me think of "Mad World." Both perfectly capture a certain kind of alienation and sadness with a shade of contentment (at least if "contentment" didn't imply happiness).

Yes, interesting and poignant lyrics, but the one-chord strum and monotone delivery is a bit sleep-inducing. Worth a listen for the lyrics but not one I'd like to be exposed to too often. 7 for the content, 3 for the delivery.

I'm pretty much with the Nottingham jury here.  Although there is a real honest feel to it that makes me want to check out some of the Eels other stuff.  (off to eMusic to see what they have)

Wow.  Always loved that song (and that album is a personal favourite from 2005).  This adds volumes to the intensity of that great song.

There was a great BBC4 documentary about Mark Oliver Everett learning about his father & his science after his father had died.  I think it was called Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives.  Brings some perspective to this song.

I'm turning out just like my father
Though i swore i never would
Now i can say that i have a love for him
I never really understood
What it must have been like for him
Living inside his head

I feel like he's here with me now
Even though he's dead

Don't usually like this introspective stuff but this is very engaging.  This gets an 8!

Dear Lord. Why is this mediocre band played so often on RP? How about (gasp) playing something by a new artist, so that we can hear some new talent?

Because you would undoubtedly hate that too.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but this is also the title of a book that E (aka Mark Oliver Everett) wrote:

The version on "Eels with strings" is equally awesome. Some of you may not like the way E sings, but there is no way you can deny his display of talent as a songwriter.

Oh spare me the drama and grow up. Claiming that any band on RP is overplayed is nonsense. Bill includes new stuff all the time.

I can't even begin to count the artists I've discovered as a result of listening to RP the past 5 years. Not all of them are my cup of tea, but I know damn well that's my issue, not the station's.
