The song is Espresso Love.

Ummm I think Mark Knoffler is from England.

I think this is the case. ...And the song is Expresso Love not Espresso Love. Read the song list on the CD.

Well, what would "Espresso Love" be (aside from a love for the coffee product)? Perhaps "Expresso Love" is just love expressed...

I was a huge DS fan. When they released their first LP, there was nothing like them out there. I think this and their double live LP are their best.

Dire Straits never were really original. Agreed. Is that bad? No. I enjoy it. I wish Mark Knopfler had done more than five DIre Straits albums ("On Every Street" should not count as a Dire Straits album).

And finally, not all songs sound exactly the same. There is clear evolution from "classic blues-rock" to "epic mainstream-rock".

(Did I write that without laughing?)

Oh for god's sake.
And I wish you were old enough top be able to talk with any authority about when DS first hit the scene. There wasn't anything like it. which is why it was such a hit.

Then you'd be old enough to see how they and Knoppfler have progressed and developed over the years.

But you're not.

Saw Dire Straits in 1979 in Charlotte, NC.
Great show. Love Mark and his guitar style. This song takes me back to Chapel Hill and being a newlywed.

I always liked the way he casually tosses that "walk in the Wild West End" bit into this one. That's a great track too.

This has the power to time-transport me to Venice Beach, LA (and of course, so does that Skateaway tune!) where I was when this broke on the scene and blew us all away...
Good stuff, and way to let it rock and let it roll, there, Bill!

Nice setup. You were waiting to unleash that bit on an unsuspecting Dire Straits fan/schmuck. I didn't have a fighting chance. ;)

There are bands that are instantly recognizable because they have a unique playing style, and then there are bands that are instantly recognizable because every song they play sounds exactly the same. Unfortunately, this falls under the latter. I don't think it's a horrible song...it just sounds like "Sultans of Swing - Part II"

I usually dig the Straits. This song sounds a bit like a mix between layla and sultans of swing. But it's still very cool.

Touche.

But I do like Dire Straits and love this album.

Lots of artists with longevity begin to sound the same on some of their songs, which, I think, is a fair criticism but not necessarily a significant one. I think it comes with the territory. For instance, many say that REM keeps repeating the same song. Can't be unique each and every time.
