Here's hoping my '10' kicks up the average from 5.5...
Kirk deserves better!
What a laugh-riot! The singers help it work.

Well said, laprincess!

Any song that makes me come in from the other room (where I was shifting furniture) to check who the heck was singing has just gotta be excellent! :-)

First, off, I have to say that Shatner's a better actor than we think. Check him out in some old B&W's some day. He had huge presence, and put a lot of thought into what he did. Since he's been typecast, though, he hasn't been able to play a role straight.

Fortunately, he's quite smart, as evidenced by the ironic way he has played most of his recent characters. I agree that Shatner's approach to age in his recent work has been far wiser than, say, that of Stephen Seagal (who can't accept that he's too fat and slow to be an action star).

Shatner's ideally qualified to turn out his kind of self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek entertainment, and he does it well.

But the problem is this trick gets old: it's worked well for Shatner, so now he pulls out the campy irony every chance he gets. It was funny the first time I saw it, six or seven years ago, but it's worn thin since then. So while I can understand those who laugh at this album, it just makes me tired. And it's sure not musically appealing.

If you haven't listened to the whole CD, you really should. It was composed and written by Shatner and Ben Folds. He has several guests that I just LOVE - Joe Jackson for one. The song about his wife is a big downer, but I adore the song to his daughter - it's sweet and thoughtful. Brought a tear to my eye the first few times I listened to it.

Way to go, laprincessa. Yeah, Shatner's a mediocre actor (not as bad as David Caruso, though!) and he's certainly not a singer - but then, neither is Neil Young or Bob Dylan, if the voice is anything to judge a "singer" by.

William Shatner, though, accepts his limitations and just has fun with it all. I honestly don't see anything wrong with that. It's those lame has-beens - who're trying to recapture their glory days and/or make money to pay the bills they racked up during their heydays because they didn't have the foresight to save their bucks and make wise choices - that bug me.

Shatner is the first person to tell you he can't sing or act. He's also the first person to give you the entire contents of his wallet if you need it.

I'm all for the guy. Hey, laprincessa, have you seen "Boston Legal"? He stars opposite James Spader and, omigawd, Candace Bergen! It's an incredibly funny, serious, scary show. Shatner plays off Spader so well - they're clearly kindred spirits, quirky, unpredictable, and clever. I can't remember ever having laughed so hard after, seeing the first few episodes.

So - has anyone heard Paul Anka's cover version of Van Halen's "Jump"? David Lee Roth, in thirty years. Still, very good stuff - Anka's another guy having fun with his obsolete-ness...

Yeah, sorry I meant Boston Legal, not Public.

Why does anyone consider this man worth listening to? He wasn't that great an actor, and he should just dry up and blow away. The self-effacement "Hey, i'm just having fun here!" doesn't make him any more palatable.

He's a bad singer, a bad entertainer, and a has-been. _I_ could do a helluva lot better than this, but you don't see me with an entire supporting band.

Thankfully.

BWAAA-HA-HA-HAAAAAA!!!!

Nice one, RP!

BTW, the rest of this album is actually kind of thoughtful. The song where he talks about finding his wife face down in the pool is seriously heavy.
