Gotta side with tiggers here... Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby were both transcendental albums, though perhaps in different ways.
A most outstanding tune from a most outstanding album. I love the dynamics of this, the crescendo and resolve. A great example of how to make a statement without beating your object over the head with the message. |

I think U2 found the end of the sound they were messing around in. To record any further like Joshua Tree would have been repeating themselves, so they ventured out.
If they had stayed with that sound we would be calling them mopey shoe gazers by now.
They made Zooropa - a fabulous record and that seemed to signal their start with a new musical palette.

Joshua Tree was not the "end of U2" in any objective sense whatsoever. Only for you - and that's your loss.
While I don't disagree with your sentiment, it is true to say that too many musicians lose something with success. I'm in a minority regarding U2 in that I like a lot of their post JT music. It must be said, however, that none of their subsequent albums (CD's, whatever) had the scope and hunger of their work up to Joshua Tree. Every release since has had at least two excellent pieces, but none has had the same power. It's a burden that most musicians would be glad to have, since Joshua Tree is probably one of the ten greatest albums. |

Usually this is people who don't get U2 after Joshua Tree, or Zooropa or whatever. Or people who don't get REM after IRS or after Monster or whatever. Or people who think Dylan started sucking/sounding the same after some random album or whatever. Or Tom Petty was awesome right up until Damn the Torpedoes or whatever.
