One of my favorites from a while ago, it's nice to hear this back in the rotation...

When he says "Paul said to Peter you got to rock yourself a little harder", I just think of Jack Black.

And that ruins the song.

AND THEN PETER LIFTS THE GOBLET OF ROCK AND SAYS ... BRING THAT GIRL HOME!!!

The instrumentation, rhythm and melody choke me up to begin with, then add the poignant lyrics...a beautiful song.

Thanks to RP and listeners' posts I've found lots of new favorite music over the last year - Josh Ritter is one of these. One poster referred to Josh's web site, where anyone can go to hear this whole album/CD/whatever - I did so, and really enjoyed - it's still available there.

God I am sick of this damn song. There should be a 50 limit play time on RP, this one hit 2000 I think.

Jeez, with all due respect to both sides of the "deciphering lyrics as a measure of moral worth" argument, it's worth remembering that the lyrics to all the songs RP plays are but one click away. Check out the "song lyrics" link underneath the "Rate song" menu. Amaze your friends with your deciphering skills. Avoid criticizing a musician for saying something he or she doesn't say. And maybe learn something.

WTF?

2. How on earth does musical taste correlate to somebody's ability to decipher lyrics? And on top of that...maturity of taste?

I'm callin' BS here.

Haha.

Call what you want, but I'm standing with my original post. One's ability to decipher lyrics directly correlates to one's taste in music. Etc.

Too bad your musical taste isn't mature enough to understand creative lyrics when they are expressed.

WTF?

1. I didn't know those were the lyrics at first either...I've heard this song a lot, and I love it.

The first few times I heard this, I didn't care for it much. After hearing it a few dozen times, however, I outright loathe it.

It's both repeated and a self-rhyme. Not only that, but the same word appears in a line twice, which is pretty grating. Combine that with the utter lack of any scanning in these lines or melody (or ability to sing same if it was there) and we have a contender for Worst Lyrics EVAR.

Jesus, I think we have a contender for Most Needing to Get Out of the Lab, and Into Someone's Pants. Bonus points for the freshman poetical analysis. You forgot to touch on tone, diction, and connotation though.

Now go forth and multiply.

I first heard this song as an acoustic live version from the Edmonton FolkFest--it's better that way, but the album version is close.
