Way back when, before all the West Coast pop garbage, there was a Fleetwood Mac album, called Black Magic Woman, if memory serves correctly, that was all blues, and far better than what they ended up as.

Huh? this SMOKES Santana's cover. Turns out Carlos stole a lot of his sound from Peter Green, who he freely admits to idolizing. Fleetwood Mac did a whole bunch of VERY cool stuff before they got famous, thanks to two genius schizophrenic guitarists, Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. It's worth checking out. Peter Green was on the same talent level as Clapton, Page, Beck, and yes, Santana. Unfortunately, his mental illness cut his career short. |

we all love the mainstream magic of "Rumours", when the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks catapulted the MAC to pop/rock stardom up somewhere in the stratosphere...........but.....nothing compares to the early classic moments of Fleetwood Mac under the inspirational genius of Peter Green and Robert Welch.........check out classics like "Hypnotized", "Emerald Eyes", and "Sentimental Lady"....no one makes music like these tunes anymore.....or even back then.....these classics stand alone, frozen in time

Back in the day, WABX (Detroit) simulcast the FM stereo portion of a TV studio "concert" these guys did on channel 50. Pretty revolutionary stuff back then and, yes, it was amazing to watch Peter, Jeremy and Danny trading licks! This wasn't your big sister's "Ed Sullivan Show", "American Bandstand", "Shindig", or "Hullabaloo". (Bear in mind this was easily 15 years before VHS tapes, never mind DVDs.) |

Ah, the original. This needs more airplay, not bashing santana but his cover has been played to death.

Never heard this song before (besides the Santana version), but I like it.
Also, I like the transition from the previous Santana song to this.

Man, one of the local collage stations has a Saturday program called "Eight Track Flashback" and this past weekend they had a special show called "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac."
Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine I would hear this classic cut twice in as many days. Takes me back to when I first discovered the Mac in a campground at Cape Hatteras when it was indeed being played on an 8-track in a VW van.

And your point is what? Lots of people cover songs and have their versions become the most recognized. That doesn't make them bad or inferior. Jimi covered All Along the Watch Tower, and I'll take his version over Bob's any day.
That said, Peter Greens FM does deserve more recognition, and this is a great version of the song that is every bit as worthy as Santana's. Thanks for playing it Bill! |

Okay, that was pretty cool.
I'd never heard this version, and didn't know it was a FM song originally. That's wild.
