Can you put this song in the file "not to be played again until next year"? I hopefully will have forgotten it by then and will take it in again full measure hoping to like it.

This is a great song...but there are many other wonderful songs on this album that RP seems to be ignoring.

And under the boughs unbowed
All clothed in a snowy shroud
She had no heart so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed
Each feather, it fell from skin
Until threadbare, she grew thin
How were my eyes so blinded?
Each feather, it fell from skin
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
A gray sky, a bitter sting
A rain cloud, a crane on the wing
All out beyond horizon
A gray sky, a bitter sting
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
It's based on an old Japanese Folk Story- bittersweet and regretful. I think they nailed it.

Lots more influences in their songs, in this one I hear Traffic in the drum part and the harmony vocals, the fiddle parts recall the band Renaissance, and the keyboard parts are reminiscent of Jethro Tull. This whole CD is full of interesting influences. |

You must suffer a LOT then.
You remind me of something my wife was told when she took voice at University. A professor told her that a professional opera singer will, on a fantastic night, hit maybe 70% of the notes, perfectly. Only 70%.
She also knew a few people with perfect pitch. They used to complain about orchestral music, because modern orchestras don't tune to a perfect pitch. The conductor usually has the whole orchestra tune slightly flat or sharp, and the difference is geographical -- i.e. Europeans tune in one direction, North Americans in the other. Most people never notice because they only have relational pitch matching. |

Hmmmmm... this is interesting, it is the Deceberists and yet it doesn't suck.
He may have found the single composition where his voice isn't bamboo under the fingernails.

The Mariner's Revenge Song definitely kicks ass! Unfortunately it's already been uploaded to the LRC and rejected. |

One of their better songs. I also really like "16 Military Wives", off of "Picaresque"; it's very catchy.

The artwork is done by Colin Meloy's (main singer/songwriter/guitarist) long time live in ladyfriend Carson Ellis. She has been The Decemberists graphic artist for quite a while. All the artwork in The Crane Wife booklet is really unusual. I like it quite a lot |
